Welding on cases (starter mount)

Turns out 247-760superjet decided that a starter mount made out of a threaded insert and JBWeld would be strong enough....I guess it wasn't. After deconstructing his shoddy work it looks like almost the entire top half of the upper starter mount was JBWeld so either it can be fixed or the cases are junk. Whats the verdict on welding the cases?

Here are the pics: you can see the first one where I noticed something wasn't right. This was right after my motor blew, you can see the void in the top of the mount is filled in (what I noticed first) the rest I did with a small stubby screwdriver and very little force. It was 75% epoxy and a threaded insert...nice work.

Welding up 2 stroke cases are nowhere near as bad as trying to weld up 4 stroke stuff as roller bearings work ok when hole is not perfectly round. Plain bearings would have a little fiesta. Heat from welding will warp case a little. But easily done on 61 x or 62 T engines.

Check for proper interference clearance when disassembled. Ensure that the case will clamp down on bearing properly. Front engine case would wear a lot faster than rear. Flywheel weight.

Cases don't last forever, but if a lot of mads have been done it could be worth while having them line bored and developing inserts/ steel saddles to stiffen them up. Gucci cool too.

If they are welding anywhere near the case half's I would watch out. I had hair line crack welded on a set of cases years ago and the ski would develop an air leak right above the weld after about 5 tanks of fuel. Never could get it fixed with just yamabond. I finally glued the whole motor together urethane. I think you could remove the case bolts and it would still run but it did cost me 3 rebuilds before I got it sealed. I would hate to have to tear it down.. LOL..

How do you know Ben did this repair ???,didn't he buy the ski from 24-7 and than take it apart right away .
You shouldn't accuse someone without having facts first .I know your bitter about the needle bearings but it's wrong to trash someone without having the facts .

Well I was told that the motor was in "great condition" with NOTHING wrong with it (I was assured Ben knew exactly what he was doing, of course, he is a "powersports technician"). Ben obviously had the motor down to bare bones AND painted it so either A) he saw the cases where repaired when he repainted it and decided to leave that information out or B) he did the "repair" and decided to leave that information out either of which makes him a liar....good thing it outlased the crank huh  Maybe he is not the perfectionist with the amazing attention to detail and the determination to do everything the right way or no way at all, or he just chopped it together for an easy sale, which one do you think?

Sounds like the same kind of Jerry rig as his manifold from your previous post.

Nothing wrong with the motor or the starter mount ???

It's pointless talking to a NEWB .

Not sure what you are saying, but name calling sure helps get your point across. Say hi to Ben for me.

Pics added to first post.

It has been my expierience that in most (DEALs)I have been involved with or run across somebody comes out good and somebody gets screwed.:scratchchin: Think about that next time you ask somebody to hook a brotha up.

I can see where he could have missed that. If the bolt was straight and the paint wasn't flaking off you would have missed it also.

But You can have anybody weld that for $20 at the most. Just remind them not to get it too hot so it doesn't warp.

Regardless of who did this "repair", I have a hunch that YOU wouldn't be too happy either to find this on a motor that has "Nothing wrong with it".

Right?

Remember, I am not blaming anyone. Just think from the buyer perspective.

that is a bummer but did you send the seller a pm or e-mail before posting on a open forum ?
sometimes people miss thing's or sometimes they are trying to pull a fast one, but I personally have seen both and it can get ugly to go public before giving a person the opportunity to make it right good luck to you both.

Had he just pulled the motor and sold it...sure. Had he pulled the motor, disassembled it, SANDED it, taped it, PAINTED it, and reassembled it....Im not buying it.

Thanks Matt for spelling it out, funny thing is this happened twice with the same seller. Once I was a little pissed, twice is a kick in the dick.
