So my friend got pulled over the other day by the H2O Cop.
"Let me take a look under that hood..."
"Son, In the state of Indiana, you cannot have a modified exhaust on any kind of watercraft, your PWC is too loud and you need to change it back to stock or Ill have to write you a ticket"

My friend rode away with his tail between his legs, Ive never heard of any kind of law like that! Its ridiculous! There's Baja boats on the lake /w straight pipes that are louder than his SJ. WTF? Anyone have access to these laws so if i get pulled over I can say "see you in court!"

factory dry /w a TDR waterbox... its not that much louder than it was /w the factory box... far from obnoxious... Its funny, there is a distinct sound of some idiot running an RXP full out across chop, because when the pump unloads and the prop spins in there you can hear it whistle, and its LOUD! much louder than my friend's SJ... I know there are people here that know what im talking about

Most likely, he doesn't know state law from a hole in the ground.
Look up the appropriate section of state law yourself.

Most likely, there will be something in there about modified exhausts above the waterline and/or without a muffler, in conjunction with a sound meter test.
Even then, the fellow will have to measure the sound level.

How did he know the exhaust isn't stock? :haha:

I am running a B-pipe (very dry), on a ported 735 engine, with a front exhaust.
This cop yesterday complimented me on how "quiet" my exhaust was.

WTF? Whatever.

Thats my exact set up and it is a little loud but not that bad! I was actually thinking about starting a thread to trade my speedwerx/TDR set up for a B/stock setup. I just don't want to be the loudest anymore.

That ticket is BS though.

"Do not modify your engine exhaust system if it increases the noise. Improperly modified exhausts will not make your PWC faster and may raise the noise to an illegal level. "

thats very subjective... laws should leave no room for gray area

I've never ever heard of that. You cant put a performance exhaust on a PWC? BS.

Call your state game and parks and talk to someone with some knowledge. Like Matt says, its all about the DB level on the machine, not whats inside.

that cops statement is bs, as long as he has a waterbox and running water thru it there is no problem. the only thing he could possibly give you is a noise violation if there is one on the lake or something.

what'd ya do on sunday, i tried callin ya a few times before i just turned around and went to my lake.

This is right from the link that Jett posted.

(IC 14-15-2) Watercraft Equipment
IC 14-15-2-4
Mufflers; underwater exhaust
Sec. 4. (a) This section does not apply to a motorboat competing in and during a motorboat race for which a permit has been issued by the department.
(b) A person may not operate a motorboat on Indiana water unless the boat motor is equipped with:
(1) a muffler;
(2) an underwater exhaust; or
(3) other device;
that muffles or suppresses the sound of the exhaust to prevent excessive and unusual noise at all speeds.
As added by P.L.1-1995, SEC.8.

Also I found this interesting

(IC 14-15-12) Regulation of Personal Watercraft
IC 14-15-12-9
Self-circling capability
Sec. 9. A personal watercraft that does not have self-circling capability shall not be operated on public waters unless:
(1) the personal watercraft is equipped with a lanyard type engine cutoff switch; and
(2) the lanyard is attached to the person, clothing, or personal flotation device of the operator.
As added by P.L.57-1995, SEC.9.
