"used only 1 time" or "only 2 tanks run though" ???

But looking through the for sale section everything always seems to be "only used 1 time" or "only 3 tanks of gas run through this engine." SERIOUSLY? why the hell did you buy it in the first place? or are you really lying by about 800%
i just thought i would throw it out there. how much do you actually think these have been used.
-some could have been used in fresh water hundreds of times while it could have the look of being used once in salt water.
-would you even know how you like the engine if your still supposed to be in the breakin period on the first couple tanks.

honestly i dont care how often its been used. as long you are honest about its performance or appearance.

im sure you all have some stories.

How long does it take to break yours? I have 2 judge lamey motors one stroker. Break in was about 10 seconds each motor

This is one time that the amount of abuse that our motorized toys get is a good thing. Its easy to tell if they have had much use and/or maintenance. For whatever reason many people turn into total scumbags when they are trying to sell something. Motorsports fans are the worlds worst in this regard.

and thats why im buying everthing new for my sj. i can sit back and relaxe polishing my baby drinking a beer knowing a have a top notch build that will last for years. ya i pay alot more but im not getting out of the sport anytime soon... :beerchug:

Most people will "freshen" up an engine to sell it as that will net a higher return but we all know that we are doing a lesser job than if we were rebuilding it for our own use. I tend to stay away from fresh rebuilds and buy bare components so i know what i am getting. Same goes for vehicles, "Fresh Paint" in an add means, "I just covered up something nasty but you should start to see it in about 6 months".

When I sell components I will represent them differently based on their history. For instance, on hour on my engine is very different than an hour on my wifes ski. stating hours really isn't a very good indicator for that reason.

When building/modding Gas or diesel engines I always thought of engine output as btu's/hr. Each engine could be rated in how many btu's it could produce over it's lifespan, if you drove it hard or extracted more btus per rpm then the engine would expire in a shorter span of time. Consider it an allowance when you first build a motor and every rpm is spending some of that allowance but at a different rate. When I build motors now, I build according to a set budget based on expected time span and performance that is matched to the application. My daily driver now is bone stock and never more than 5mph over the limit whereas my last truck was a 1 ton cummins turbo diesel with 485HP and 850ft/lbs of torque that cost me more $$ to run for 6 months than my daily driver has cost to purchase and run for almost 2 yrs. The only race I was in was the race to the end of my motors and my savings account.

Items should be sold with that concept in mind. What is the expected timeline of these components and where is my item on that chart?

I've gone both ways on this. I've bought and sold items with this regard. It pays to do some "homework" and ask a few questions. Just taking someones' word is never enough (or just plain careless on your part). However, I've sold parts that I've bought, installed and either didn't like the fit/feel or the performance change and asked "near new" prices minus the shipping it cost me from the original source. Why ask what it costs from the factory when someone can go there and get it? With that in mind I don't see where it's false advertising or an attempt to trick someone if it's truely near new. Pricing is another story though. It"s the original buyer/new seller's loss that their trying to sell something that's virtually new, but actually used. You're gonna have to take some kind of loss selling it due to the fact that it's been opened, used, tried on or whatever. Just part of the game. If you don't like the price the seller's asking or how their advertising it...don't buy it. It's simple. The market commands what the buyer will pay. It's an easy game. Play if you want to.

And most of them haven't been, being a racer and being involved with a local moto shop, I can tell you that the percentage of bikes with numbers and bikes that get raced is big. But the fact is that buying a race bike is normally a better buy because it's been maintained to be ready to race, nothing worse then a DNF you could have prevented. Now the hobby riders with triple digit's on there plates and energy drink graphics and all the bling more then likely rarely service there bike because it still runs fine, spend their money on cosmetics and wait til the damage is done before fixing it. Just my .02

A word on vehicle maintenance...I have owned one "Lady Driven Only" vehicle and while i must say it was one of the best looking trucks in town, it was the least maintained vehicle I have ever purchased. I replaced shocks, brakes, rotors, the entire front end, motor and transmision all because not a stitch of maintenance was done on the vehicle. I must say the interior and exterior was immaculate though so after I dropped in an LT1 spec 350 and rebuilt all the running gear I did have one sweet ride but still, had I known going in I never would have bought it.
