FX-1 Upgrade ignition module: worth it?

I'd say yes, especially if you ever plan on putting a pipe on it where you would need a higher rev limiter. I'd look for an MSD Enhancer. It has a much better timing curve than OEM.

If you are looking for a cheaper HP gain, you can advance the timing a couple degrees on the stator. Doing this and an Enhancer would be a good little bump and you would be in great shape for adding a pipe next.

I've never had good luck with pipes. I was thinking of just installing a different head for high octane gas and and the ignition module

Not to get off topic but have you ever tried a B-pipe by Factory pipe? They are rock solid in design and performance.

I had one one a 750SX. after installing it, it was fine for awhile, then after that it was always running bad, fouling plugs and causing headaches. another friend had the same experience and needed his ski rebuilt. it seems like there's a reason stock skis sell for a better price than ones that are all jerked over with mods and don't run right or cause a lot of headaches and wrenching. I'm pipe shy I guess. I wouldn't mind doing something like that on backup ski, but I want this FX to stay stock and ready to ride all the time. it's got a gazillion hours on it and i love it.

Well if you are happy now then I wouldn't do anything. Just leave well enough alone and keep on riding.

Some days I wish I had never caught the mod bug.

I can see doing it on other skis but the FX-1 is pretty nice stock. I am going to install footholds or dakine straps so I can sub better

would I see any benefit to a total loss conversion? just tossing some ideas around. Take into consideration my fear of pipes my be unfounded.
other upgrades? people pipe their skis and shortly thereafter it's for sale. I could be wrong, I'm trying to elicit responses. does anyone else even own an FX-1? (crickets). who installed a pipe and just added gas for 10 years?

Keep the stock carbs, reeds and intake, add an aftermarket head and bump compression up to 185, toss in a Bpipe and MSD Enhancer and be done. As long as you keep up on maintenance, that should be a reliable setup for years of trouble free service. This setup is being run by so many people that it should be real easy to dial it right in with great power and still be on the safe side of things.

My first stand up was a Superjet with a ported 701, Coffman pipe, Enhancer ignition and I ran it for over 7 years without any major issues besides a bad Bendix and starter. I now have a ported 760 with every mod possible and I haven't touched a screw in over 4 years. I also have a stock stroke 865 that was built up on a 701 crank and cases with a Bpipe and it's on headed into season 3 with zero issues as well, even with the added stress of a big bore cylinder and pistons. The Yamaha platform is tried and tested and is still very reliable even in modded form.

I feel towards total loss like you feel about pipes. Total loss is a huge gain but comes with more work than I have ever been willing to commit too. Between charging batteries, failing triggers and bad modules, it's a very expensive and time consuming pain for the gain. Others will disagree and like you said, probably unfounded, that's just been my experience.

Yeah the big thing about total loss from what ive been told, is to b able to adjust timeing and get a stronger spark more like kawis, you b best to stick with msd enhancer, or get an advent that can have up to 4 timeing curves witj a flip of a switch, and when u up graded motors or pipes u can send to theme and have it programmed

I have a love/hate relationship with TL like many others. in 3 seasons I went through 3 controllers and one coil. When it's working, it can't be beat. richen it up, crank up the timing down low, pull it back up top, and the motor screams with delight. Don't even need a primer, starts instantly and fires up much easier after a little water ingestion.

That said, it sucks having to work on it, swim a ski back, charging it all the time for fear of a dead battery, having it fail on the first day of a vacation to ride, etc. I had to keep several spares on me at all times, even microcontrollers. So my advice is that if you have 2 ski's you love to ride, put TL on one and enjoy it when you can. If you have only one ski, I'd go with an MSD enhancer or Advent and invest the extra money in some motor mods instead. and ride as much as possible.

I have to admit, MSD is good about honoring their warranty though. All 3 of my controllers that went bad were replaced for free. just lost riding time and some frustration.
