*UPDATE* smoke from Ebox

Engine should be free although I will try it when I get home. When I put it away it was running. Battery was just low and in need of a charge.

Looks like I'll dig in tomorrow during the rain.

then you'll just have to REDO the job again after a short time...I dont know about you, but I HATE changingh starters.......
I've always found pulling the starter to be 1 of the easiest things to do on my 550... The XP can be a PITA.

Replacing a starter that is locked up is the right way to go. Not the cheapest or the fastest but certainly the best.
While you have it out, you should find what's causing the squeling problem.

Battery was just low and in need of a charge.
Your issue could be your battery.

U said the starter turns? Is that with your hand or with the start button?

the only time smoke coming out of the ebox is good
is when you stashed your smoke :439: there earlier
until you got to the sand bar

when checking the fuse he would have seen water....if the blaster e-box is similar to the sj.

Maybe not related, but my b-pipe coupler was seperated (due to shimming up the water box to keep the stinger off of the motor mount) and white smoke was in the engine compartment. And it blew back toward the e-box. Long shot. But it happened.

OK couple of responses....

Engine turns freely.

Starter was turned by hand.

Honestly I never thought to make sure the box was sealed. As obvious as it is I guess I just assumed it was which was a bad idea as stuff hasn't been exaclty how it should be with this blaster.

No water came out when I checked the fuse.

Battery should be good but I can always through my couch battery in there.

I know that the pipe was sealed up well as I had just pulled it off and sealed it very well.

Starter. Or as simple as the pos connection to the starter. Check your ground to the engine while you're at it. Hopefully nothing is damaged in the e-box. Open it. Check all connections and condition of wires. Don't put it back together until the problem is solved.

If there was smoke coming out of the ebox, then you need to open it up and investigate.

A bad or discharged battery will have low voltage. Trying to start the engine with low voltage will cause the amps pulled to spike (electrical power = voltage x current(amps)). The increased current will often destroy the weakest link.

Things to check: Your solenoid could have arc welded itself shut, the starter could be fried, pos/neg. battery cables and connections

Allergies have had me feeling pretty bad but here's a quick update of what I've found.

First I think the starter is gonna need to be replaced because a hugh amount of powder came out when I attempted to open it (maybe graphite for lubrication), but the big issue as I see it was there were loose pieces that looked like metal ribbons in it.

I got the ebox open but there was a weird residue in it. Wasn't from something like white lithium grease, but almost seemed like what you would find from dried out gas.

Hopefully, I'll know more tomorrow as my dad is gonna help me go through the electrical problem.

Ok guys update time. Finally got a chance to have everything at home and fully pulled apart.

Well the starter is gonan get replaced as when I opened it all sorts of black dust pured out (maybe graphite for lube?) but most importantly there were little metal ribbon like pieces that fell out. With all the squealing it's definitely time for a different starter.

The starter relay, is that the same as the solenoid?, is fine. Checked out as the service manual said it should.

Now where should I go? I'm tempted to hook it all up and see what happens. Maybe with the cover off the box I can see if any smoke comes out. Not gonna run it just see if it'll turn over.

Also, the residue definitely wasn't salt.

Thanks guys

Well guys I'm not sure what's going on with this thing anymore. Went out this morning to hook everything back up to see if I could get any smoke again, and nothing. That's a good thing.

However, now it'll crank with no issue. Maybe my starter was kinda locked up like someone said and when I took it apart and played it it freed up? But anyway starter was order from jetmaniac this morning so once I get that I can get it all closed up.

I'll take any suggestion on other things to check before I reconnect everything. I'm hoping this will be my last unplanned disassembly for awhile.

Hey guys figured I'd give you all a final update. After I reconnected the electrical system everything is working no smoke. New starter from Jetmaniac installed and started it up again with no smoke and this time no noise (a problem from previous posts).

Except for the 2 hose clamps I forgot to put back on the exhaust coupler everything seems to be fine now.

Hopefully I'll finally get some ride time.
