Turfing the rails

Whatz up guys? My buddy and I are thinking about turfing the rails? Who has done and do you they fall off or what not? Whatz ur experiences with them. Do you install them with contact cement?..

Install it like you would install regular turf: with contact cement.
It looks nice, and if you're into hood tricks, it'll be nice and easy to step on the rails without slipping.
Cut turf strips, about 4 - 5 inches wide. Then simply apply contact cement to both surfaces. Place the strip on the top, then wrap it around to the vertical surface. Let it dry, then cut it either flush, or at a slight angle.
It would probably look best if you sanded the edge, to give a more smooth transition.
It should hold up real strong - I haven't had a lick of problem with mine.

Don't do it!!! Stock rules but if those are trashed PM yamaslut, he used some great auto molding. It loooks awsome!!

Turfed rails require checking/re-glueing occasionally.

Personally, I like the turfed look better.

And what do you mean, they require checking and regluing?
If done right, they are rock solid. I had mine on for one whole season, and when I stripped my hull, I had a very tough time getting the turf off.

Like Matt said apply contact cement to both surfaces let dry then install turf. Use a heat gun to mold the turf and a rubber hammer to apply pressure. the more pressure you put on contact cement the better it will stick. cut the left over turf with a razor at an angle. Then you can apply a bead of superglue on the edge to help keep it from pulling up. Im going to be doing this same thing in about a week. Ill post some pics in my build thread

for you guys doing it on a squarenose, do you start at the lip in the rail, or right at the edge of the ski?

I guess the person who put mine on did'nt do a good job then. It does look OK but mine always needs a little TLC. Stock rails and Yamasluts automotive stuff look great too and they require nothing ever.

Go with the turf and use super glue at the bottom.
My turf is solid and will not come loose even if I want it to .

Yamaslut has a brand new paint job and just a one inch strip of rubber or plastic down the side .
If your paint is anything but brand new I don't believe it will work for you .

you have to sand the hell out of the side rails and the backside of the turf........ use the rubber mallet also...........

cut turf and 45 degree angle, and sand, this keep the water from getting behind the turf and peeling off while riding........

Same here! I also use the side rails to get up in the tray, so widened and turfed makes them easier to grab.

I think the nose looks good turfed too. :cool2:

Mike Serlin had the same thing as Slutty did for a couple years. Held up well untill he started hittin the surf, and then it just peeled off.

I have had good luck with my rails so far. Sanded the rails with 90 grit, 3 coats of clue on each surface, heat gun and just wrap them on and apply ltsa pressure, malot helps. Then I used a fresh razor and cut the edge at 45 deg. Then block sanded with like 120 grit for a "smooth transition between turf and rail. Then I got some silicone, the runny hard drying stuff, and ran a thin coat all the way arround the lip.

It is somewhat time consuming, but well worth it, and I think it will last quite a while if done right.

Thanks Phill! Hubby widened my rails using the padding you use under the turf. He cut strips of it and glued them on. (three layers of it, I think)Then turfed right over them. They're totally solid.

Cost.. zero dollars! He was able to do it with scrap material.:cool2:


edit, he used regular non-grooved turf, not the underpadding. My bad.

Still free though, since he used scrap turf.
