going with a small a/m aluminum waterbox
do not want to wear a hole through the hull, so
do I turf the engine compartment or the bottom of the box?
thanks!

I turfed the bottom of my hull for the waterbox and fuel tank. I suggest NOT doing that. When you inevitably spill gas or have an exhaust leak, all the crud will cling to the turf and make it nasty. If it's on the box, it's much easier to clean and replace if necessary.

turfing the box will also help change the pingy sound they have a habit of producing from resonance.

rough it up well an wipe clean w/ a paint prep of some sort to remove the oils. turf it and install w/ a piece of under pad under it

I would worry mainly about the outside edges underneath. With the shape of the hull, that box will sit on the welds at each end, so make sure there is plenty of padding there
