Getting ready to do some work to the tray area for my first time. I have been searching around the threads but thought this would be easier. Also for others in the future.

Can you guys post up names of the BEST chemical for every step (In oder). From cleaning the tray after peeling off old turf, adding footholds, stengthening the tray, and adding turf.

ex: 1) Cleaning old left over turf - This product

Thanks

you dont need to take off the old glue, if its stuck, its stuck! your just gonna turf over it so why does it need to be pristene and clean??
epoxy resin, i like west systems. consistent, yet comparatively expensive. use with fiberglass. get rid of the gel coat wherever you lay glass(best way is to use a grinder with a paint stripper wheel.
dap weldwood in the RED can.

When you ask 100 people their opinion on the "best" of anything around here you will get 100 different answers. Having said that, all I have ever used was uscompsites epoxy and had great results with it. West Systems filler worked great as well.
On my old SN I built up a few years ago I used a drill and a paint stripper to remove the old turf that wouldn't peel off. The old adhesive that wouldn't come off I just sanded it as flush as I could.

I always thought it would be better to clean the tray before adding new turf but yeah, I guess its not really a big deal.

Put acetone in a Windex bottle an use a plastic scraper and start on an edge on the sides. Spray the acetone on the turf where its peeling back. With enough acetone and patience you will get the sides off glue and all. The acetone will run down into the bottom of the tray and the bottom will come out easy.

Another approach is to use the older style brake/electrical contact cleaner. Its nasty stuff and will desolve most all polymers. This stuff may disolve gel coat so be carefully. I took the turf off of a 550 in about 5 min with this stuff. You would never know it was ever turffed. I think the supertech stuff from wally world is the older style.

A wire brush on a drill eats old turf like buttah!

Thats what i use too, works great.
I dont agree with leaving the old turf glue on..thats ridiculous. You want your new turf bonded to the ski not the old dryed glue crap.

Yeah. Eats fiberglass, too.

A nice $3-4 BRASS wire wheel or cup brush on a drill or angle grinder will have it off in a jiffy. Dont use hard steel industrial strength bristle type brushes.

I guess Snowxr hasn't been looking at pics of some of these peeps trays before they are turfed,I don't think a wire brush would hurt them too much lol.

1. Cleaning off old glue in the tray: Gas (a little at a time with a scraper, comes right off with no problems!)

2. Installing footholds: Marine Tex (http://www.marinetex.com/MarineTexproducts.html) and screws

3. Adding strength to the tray: Extra fiberglass, but never really heard of many people having to do this to the tray. Mostly just reinforce the nose and inside the boat.

4. Adding NEW turf: Hydro-turf glue

I used to use lacquer thinner and a razor blade scraper, until I was showed the brass wire cup brush method. Now I dont have to put up with the smell or the gooey mess.

Thanks to whoever the X member was that posted that a few years ago.
