Other Towing with a Toyota 22R.

I just bought/traded for a 1987 5-speed 4X4 Toyota Pickup (22R (carbureted)). The motor is in good shape and I just installed a head with oversized valves and a torquier cam.

I was hoping it would be decent for towing two SuperJets on a small trailer, plus fuel, etc. I don't have a reciever for it yet but will eventually weld up a bumper. The terrain is a bit hilly in spots.

Has anyone towed with a truck like this? How did it go?

Been towing with a Toyota 2x4 with a 22r for years, double trailers with sitdowns on them and even a camper all the way to Atlanta and back a few years ago, shouldn't be a problem.Just don't go putting huge tires on it as it changes the gearing where it won't pull squat.

I towed my skis & trailor with a 22r powered Totoya 4x4 for years. Its all good until you have to go up a hill. Then its all about 2nd gear!

My buddy has a 4banger toyota. Does a good job. He can get up the steep boat launch with 2 stand ups in the back and a trailered sit down.

Obv being manual it isn't exactly nice on his tranny though.

22r or 22re=carefree towing for life. Do keep the tire size in check though.

I used to haul my old ski behind my 82 lifted 4x4 with a 22r and 36" swampers.. it was barely geared and did awesome! Most of those towing times I was loaded down with camping gear and firewood too.. 22r's are one of the best motors out there..

i cant beleive this was even a question. my first truck was a 4x4 22re manual trans with 3 in lift and 33/12.50's. that damn truck would pull anything. i pulled a 5500 pound trailer 400 miles when we moved. stopping is what i was more worried about....

you will be fine with a couple skis.

biggest mistake of my life was selling that truck. it was a early 95 so it was still the pickup but had power everything and a full roll down rear window.

The body isn't the prettiest but I was able to make it look decent with some compounding.

I have another truck I can tow with but just wanted to make sure this was capable before I buy or start welding up a bumper.

Its got the stock 4:10's and 31" tires currently. It is alot easier to drive around town than my other truck thats for sure.

I use a 98 HP. scion xB for two skis without issue I think the truck will be just fine.

i bet its not near as bad as you think. going from 31's to 33x12.50 made very little difference on my truck.

I've driven tons of lifted pickups, most of them small size pickups w/ 35s. Simply 36s are way too big for stock gearing. I'm not saying it can't move or anything, just a huge change in acceleration. In 4low though my torque was still fine. I just don't get to zoom around anymore =[

it could vary greatly depending on the condition of the truck. i sold my 1995 22re pickup for 4500 dollars with 245,000 miles on original engine. it was in decent shape with no rust. now i have seen them go for anywhere between 1800 for one thats falling apart or 6500 for one in great shape. having a 22re(fuel injected) and being 4x4 would be a must. personally i wouldn't own a single cab either. i really wish i still had mine.

It had 4.10's and sucked.. I found a set of 4.38's in the wrecking yard while getting some new birfields.. Before it was a struggle to start out in 1st with a dual centerforce.. I cannot explain it, because it wasn't much of a gear change, but the 4.38's I could start out in 2nd easily.. It did just fine and is still on the road with its new owner.. Of course he is putting a 4.3 in it now.. I'm a mechanic and have run into the same issues with lifted trucks as you state.. This truck for some reason was weird..
