Surfriding Total Loss vs. Epic Flame

Is the spark comparble? I have a msd enhancer and wires and when salt water gets on the wires it runs crappy for a bit. I am losing spark power so wondering if i need a stronger one. Which has the best spark? Spraying the wires with silicone spray seems to keep it working longer.

I hear MSD has stronger spark. However, the ATP plays much nicer in salt water. Even though my Flame has some draw backs with battery voltage (I believe that's been fixed), I love how I don't have to worry at all in salt water.

Honestly Tanner,
You need a stronger hull. Both you and Thrillhill remind me of the "Tremors" movie.

Stronger spark might make you spontaniously combust, underground! lol!

Hahaha...my hull is plenty strong. Now a lighter one is even better!

Just breakin' balls.

But ..... we both have enough friends who have tried total loss in surf.....with poor results.
I truly don't understand it. But it seems to be the case.

Total loss seems to be like a woman with PMS. Too damn sensative.
Don't even know why it works in fresh water either. It gets the same abuse.....

salt is not sulfuric acid!

Flame in salt works flawlessly.

I respect your opinion Matt. But, the flame is leaving a lot of people on the shore. Quite a few have yanked 'em to go back to MSD.
Maybe operator error, but if it's gonna take rocket science to get spark....give me what works.

The main complaint that I've heard/witnessed: Spark stops completely...without warning. Just stops working.

Tanner if your wires are leaking with the spark energy you have, you don't need more this will just make things worse, what you need is to fit some new wires or coil and stop them leaking. The best thing to do is double insulate the wires and heat shrink the ends so the water can't get behind it do this before you use the new wires in the water.
Chris.

I've not witnessed this myself until recently on an EPIC, once I had my hands on a unit doing this it was an easy fix. We are now in the process of doing a new flash for flame to cure this random issue.

Hey chris
Quick question...i havent played around much with the software but is there a way to check to see if you have the most current version on an epic or flame.

Yes, when you connect to the software you will see the serial number in the bottom right hand corner, just let me know what it is and I can see what flash etc you are running.

I have that issue too when my battery gets down too far. It would still be enough to fire other ignitions for hours, but not the Flame. That is the only complaint I have about my system. It's super-picky about battery voltage and the health of other components in the electrical system. It's very annoying at times.
But - it's sealed and never fusses with salt, and that makes up for it.

PS: When it stops completely, put a fresh battery on it.

Edit: A bit of an explanation - I got a very good deal on a slightly used second gen Flame a couple of years ago. In order to have the ignition work for more than half a tank, I've had to spend money on a new OEM starter, new battery and ground cables, and a second battery. I understand that the electrical system should be in good shape anyway, but it's annoying that the slightest flaw at all will cut down my ride time dramatically. An MSD TL will spark as long as the starter turns. My Flame quits LONG before that.
Aftermarket starter? Forget about it.
Lightweight battery? Forget about it.
Cold weather? Forget about it.

I've learned to live with it, and the saltwater performance is nice. But I probably wouldn't go that way again.

Hmmmm...good idea. My coil has been around a while, probably time for a new one.

So just get some really long heat shrink, take the plug ends off and slip on and warm up?

If you use a new OEM Yamaha coil it is already double insulated but the ends are cable tied, its best to remove the cable ties and use shrink tube over the ends. If you get water in between you are always going to get issues in salt water.

Just so you are aware Mat the Flames now spark down to about 7 volts although your ski probably wouldn't be cranking to start it anyhow with voltage that low.
Chris.

I know that the problem with mine has been fixed in newer units. Is there any way to upgrade mine?
