To mod or not to mod

Rebuilding my 07 SXR because its down to 120psi and its a little tired. Going to rebuild the engine completely with new gaskets, seals etc. but I'm debating about doing a few mods while i have it apart. I will be racing the stock class for 2015 and I've heard great things about Group K's 849cc kit but is it worth the money or should i invest in something else?

While i have the engine out I'm considering painting the bilge, replacing all fuel lines, and just sanitizing everything in general. How much work is it to get theses SXR bilges ready for paint? Ive seen "bilge Kote" used and it looks pretty good but are there any better products out there i should consider?

Any input is appreciated, thanks in advance!

there is a ton you can do to make a competitive stock class machine and the 849 kit would be the last thing i did..if at all. unless you have EVERY other stock class legal mod and can ride the hell out of it, then i would just go with the next size up bore

All I've go now is a TBM Plate and Grate, Bars, Throttle lever, pole spring, and grips. I just figured since i had the engine apart it would be a good opportunity to add some performance mods. Any other suggestions?

for stock class:

advent, custom water routing, exhaust stinger, rejet the carbs, flame arrestors, ect. there is a lot of stuff you can do to eek rpm and mph out of it to be competivive

Could you elaborate on "custom water routing"? By advent you are refereeing to the T3 CDI correct? Sorry I'm new to the SXR's so trying to get familiar.

I have an advent if you want it for $350

Go with fresh top end, Flame arresters. 6 deg advance. (temp sensor bypass). 4 deg bars moved forward. Ride Ride Ride

If you rely want more power add factory wet pipe. But a good rider is worth more speed!

TBM ride plate is good for heavy riders under 60 mph in chop. It lifts to much for lighter riders or faster than 60 speeds.

i ran the leaky dry pipes for years, that spit poop all over the engine compartment. i just used gas and a brush to clean it. i wouldnt paint it, that'll just look worse in the near future.

Call Kommander. They are local to you, and know how to set up a class legal boat.

I've been working with Steve at APS just because he's a lot closer and have gotten some good ideas. Kommander is just too far away.

Anybody have any tips for painting the bilge? Really like the look of it and it makes the whole engine bay look more sanitary

I see some people have a hard time reading. He is racing Stock.............. No Pipes.............

User Error hit most. Add the R&D Pump Plug kit for the back of the pump shoe. Solas Dynafly prop 12/21 But get it from IMPROS, it a custom pitch.

The water upload_2014-10-2_13-32-10.jpegrouting is simple. You run dual inputs. one for the cylinder and one for the pipe. You dump 2 lines off the head. Also, put a restrictor into the line heading into the pipe.

Thanks for the help! I imagine there is a few "How to's" on setting up dual cooling so I wont ask how its done. The engine bay is already clean as can be Im just really anal and hate the dirty look and the raw fiberglass showing.

Correct on the 849cc kit, but I still think it's a waste of $$

6.3 ENGINE — TWO-STROKE
6.3.1 Engines may be bored. Replacement piston assemblies may be used provided the original port timing, compression ratio,
dome profile, skirt length and shape and type of material are not changed. Non-conforming pistons (ie skirt shape that is not
an exact replica of the OEM piston) may be approved by the IJSBA but such approval must be obtained in writing.
Replacement piston assemblies must weigh within ±25.00% of original equipment. Engine displacement must not exceed
class designation (e.g., 550cc in 550 Stock, 850cc in 850 Stock, etc.) unless otherwise noted. Cham

I don't plan on going with that kit, at least not yet. So far I'll be doing spark arrestors, impeller, pump shoe seal, dual cooling, drying out exhaust, jetting, and possibly an ignition of i read enough good things about it. Anything else I'm missing?
