Tired of top end rebuilds

We went through he same problem w/ our 650SX, Take the Jet ski out and it's running good, (165#/cyl.). Then the carb sucks water, from too many subs and fountains . We limp the jet ski back to the docks and go through the drill.

- Pull plugs
- Pull plunger, while turning over motor
- water shoots out 10' high
- dry plugs
- restarts

After I get it back to the garage, check compression, it's down....way down

We have to replace rings to get compression back...!!!

How can we avoid doing a top end rebuild everytime it takes on water?

You shouldn't need a topend job just because you took on water unless you let it sit in there for a while.

You also shouldn't be doing so many subs/fountains that the carb takes on water. Put in a bilge pump, let it run, after a trick that takes on water, don't do another trick until the bilge pump has finished emptying the hull.

There are other things too, like modify the hood so the front intakes are closed and only the rears are open---you may have to enlarge the rears some so the engine can still get enough air though.

Don't make me open that can.... lol

I've since closed the front hood holes, and fixed the hood seal....

I might be gun shy now, and just trying to keep from rebuilding.

I've seen the video (spt?) showing how to 'get the water out', but once these riders get water in, they still have good compression?

surf riders sink theirs multiple times in one day sometimes and they still run good

usually just getting water in the motor wont kill compression instantly

After you sink and get the motor restarted you do go and ride the ski right away, right ?

Your reeds look OK ?

I lost count how many times my 650 was full of water but it never dropped compression.

Just a long shot, but i heard those plungers on kawis leak could that be leaking and running lean and melting the rings??? Ive always heard not to use that and to remove and block it off.

Do you have an aftermarket flame arrestor ?

Did you ever ride the ski with open hood to see if it takes in water while riding or takes in water while sitting for a short time ? >> You might already be riding with water in it ? Stock Bildge working ? Exhaust tight not leaking ?

Additional Bildge hooked up ?

Have you replaced the Crank Flush with a block off plate ?

Im going to remove the plunger and block it.

F/A K&N, Rule 500GPH, and I will keep a closer eye on the engine compartment while riding

I'm Putting in a dump tube (that's for me, not the ski)

if the water is shooting out that far when you turn the motor over, it could have enough pressure to damage the reeds. which is what happened to me. the lesson i learned was to flip the ski over with the plugs out and let most of the water drain out that way before turning the motor over.

the force of the water pushed my reeds backwards and being stainless they bent and werent seating at all. just a thought.

Just ride
if your to the point where you have that much water in your motor, and your trying to crank it over you could blow a crank seal. turn it on it's side and turn it over by hand until you get those big squirts over water out . just remember if it's sunk the exhaust is filled with water to so if you turn it on it's side and you think you got all the water out, when you turn it back up all the water in the exhaust goes back in the cylinder. crc fogging oil helps a lot when your trying to get your motor to kick over again too.
also when you take it for your first ride after getting most of the water out, don't tighten your spark plugs all the way for the first 5 minutes or so. if theres any water left in your motor and can squirt out the plug holes instead of possibly bending something in your motor.
