Since our ability to ride is directly porportionate to the cost of gas, I was wondering which countries have the least expensive gas in the world. I googled it and according to an article in MSNBC, the following 10 countries have the least expensive gas in the world today

1. Venezuela — $0.18 per gallon
2. Saudi Arabia- $0.48 per gallon
3. Libya — $0.54 per gallon
4. Turkmenistan — $0.72 per gallon
5. Bahrain- $0.78 per gallon
6. Kuwait — $0.84 per gallon
7. Qatar — $0.90 per gallon
8. Egypt — $1.14 per gallon
9. Oman — $1.20 per gallon
10. Algeria — $1.20 per gallon

Venezuela is not only the least expensive, but it also has an extensive ocean border. Unfortunately Venezuela is located on the top of South America on the Atlantic side, so I'm sure the surf is fairly weak, but when I Googled Venezuela images, the girls are hot and theres a lot of tropical beaches and rain forrest river riding areas. I could get used to filling my SJ for .90 per ride!

.18 cents LOL, I'd be driving my truck cross country. So is it the same supplier that sells us gas and the Venezuela or different suppliers to get gas stupid cheap... Either way the average income in Venezuela is probably 5 bucks a day.

They shared horror stories of the problems they have with the fuel they receive. For example, having to run 3-4 recor filters to clean the gas. Pretty wild stuff. Cheap not always good.

well i rather have 5 weeks paid vaccation in pouring rain than silly 2 weeks. every day of the month.
i fueled my ski today. i paid 8,53 usd for a us gallon of fuel. 93 octane.

fun thing on gas here. its that we pay tax on tax. we pay tax on fuel and then there is a sales tax which is 25% of sale price of the fuel.

I don't really think our ability to ride is directly proportional to the cost of gas, or proportional at all... my ability to ride is not related in any way to the price of gas. Gas at $4 or gas at $2 or gas at $6 I'm going to ride the exact same amount...

Then you should count yourself fortunate. Either way gas @4bux per gallon means every ride costs about $22 (gas and oil) plus the gas you spent getting to your riding spot. If you ride several times a week then it adds up quickly. I am fortunate myself also as I live really close to my riding spot but many of my riding buddies drive up to an hour each way to get here in Oceanside where they can ride surf, and by far the most common reason they don't ride as much as they'd like to is because it costs them $50 every time they want to ride. Bottom line is, even though other countries are paying way more for gas, we're still getting ripped off here, European countries are just getting ripped off even more than us.

Agree 100%. I'll eat Ramen Noodles or ride a bike to work before I let gas prices stop me from riding. Back when it was $5 a gallon for premium I was burning $125 a week in my RN alone. Throw in the son's SN, daughter's B1 and wife's couch, and that was a spendy summer.
Hardly took the boat out at all though, but didn't really miss it because the skis are 100X more fun. Gotta pay if you wanna play.

"Ripped off" - I don't think we're getting ripped off.... All/most of the prices you listed are subsidized by the government...

Do you really want to live in Venezuela? Turkmenistan? Libya? Just to save a few dollars on gas?

I'm happy to pay what gas costs (cost of oil which is set by the free market, refining, transportation, fair profit for those involved) plus tax to the government to live in a first world, non-dictator run, democratic country. Of course I would like to pay less, and it sucks when prices go up, but the free market is setting the price of oil, and the government needs its tax dollars.

If you read the rest of the MSNBC article that you referenced, it states:

"The last time the government attempted to raise gasoline prices in 1989, riots ensued, and hundreds of people died. Venezuelans are likely to continue paying less for fuel than bottled water for years to come." - Is that worth cheap gas?

and

"Saudi Arabia spends about $13.3 billion a year to subsidize gasoline and diesel prices, Abdullah Al Shehri, governor of the Electricity and Cogeneration Regulatory Authority, told the Gulf News." - $13.3B would be WAY more in the US due to the larger population and higher gas consumption here... Where is that money going to come from? Defense? Education? Healthcare? Infrastructure? Something else you take for granted?

The United Arab Emirates and Qatar followed, each spending close to $2,500 per person." - $2500 per person in the US would be close to $800 BILLION a year. That's about 5% of the current national debt per year in gas subsidies, tacked right back on top of the national debt.

Where do you think the roads you use to get to the water come from? Tax dollars... The coast guard, police, etc to save you if you get stranded? Tax dollars... The boat launch you use? Tax dollars...

I could go on...

If you are on this forum you pretty likely live in one of the better countries to live in (US, Canada, Australia, Western Europe, etc), there are plenty of worse things than having to pay a bit extra to operate what is essentially a toy. And complaining that your own government won't subsidize the fuel for it is hardly a defensible position.

Dude you're putting a little more effort forth than is necessary, the article was for enjoyment only. I don't really care if you think our fuel is fairly priced, good for you. As for me, I worked for an environmental company alongside the big oil companies for several years and believe me they're making a killing and yes, we're getting hosed

were paying $2.15ish for 1 litre of 98. so each ride is usually costs about $40.

Just because the government does not subsidize our gas doesn't mean we're getting ripped off by oil companies.

Everyone wants to complain about the price of gas, but in the grand scheme of things it isn't the worst thing we could be dealing with.
