TBM Flywheel Carnage!!

Installed a new TBM flywheel with no problems whatsoever. It didnt bind and dropped into the case without a hitch. Went to go ride it and the ski was hesitant, but after pumping the throttle 2 - 3 times it would take off and top out as well, so i figured it was a timing issue; rode this way a couple hours. Ended up taking the ski home and installing a new billet flywheel cover and noticed some shavings in the case, pulled the flywheel and come to find out the flywheel hub was rubbing against the stator plate! Luckily i didnt blow any coils on the stator or even worse f- up the engine!

The TBM hub is alot thicker than the stocker hub, but whats weird is that it didnt bind at all during installation.. Now how did that happen..

i bought this SJ from a friend and the case says 62T on it.. now can you run a 61x flywheel in a 62t case?

Absolutely.

It doesn't come that way from the factory, but you can put a 61X stator/flywheel combo in there.

are there any disadavantages to the 61x in a 62t case? Would it benefit me any to throw a 62t flywheel and stator back into it?

No. It doesn't make any difference.
If you wanted to put an aftermarket ignition on there our another TBM flywheel, then the 62T combo would be better

I don't think that flywheel is trashed is it?

I did measure my two flywheels this am and the inner diameter of the 61x is 3.82, and the 62t is 4.15. So that means to me that the ignition and charging coils are mounted inboard farther (the root cause of the rubbing?). I would think that having a larger gap between the magnets and coils will result in a weaker spark and poor charging (won't it?).

I don't know if machining it down is going to be the answer. Maybe a 62t stator and run that one?

Yep, that sounds like what i need to do. I think i can still run it since it isnt completely trashed. Sorry for being harsh this morning flapjack, i was an ass.
