Went riding last weekend rode fine until i lost my duckbill and got some water in the hulll. Took it home flushed it out no problems then went to start it again and i got a "click" tried one more time fired up just fine. Next day i went to blow some more water out and all i got was a "click" again. This time though i had to hit the start about 6 times to get it running. Next day i hit the start about 10-15 times before it ran just fine, now today just keeps clicking no matter how many times i try. The battery is new. Cleaned battery terminals, neg and pos wires at the battery and at the starter, there was a little rust but now nice and clean. Put everything back together and still the same issue????

Can you turn it over by hand with the plugs out?
Have you jumped out the solenoid?
After that is the starter or bendix...

...at this point,
1. Make sure connections to electrical box are clean and tight.
2. Jump the connections on the electrical box with a screwdriver and see if it fires.
"Yes", problem is switch or solenoid.
"No" problem is starter or battery.
If yes, cut the white and black wire going to your switch and touch them together and see if it fires.
"Yes" stop button on switch is bad and stuck on 'stop'.
"No" Solenoid is bad.

Yep that's what i'm narrowing it down to.
Its turns with plugs out, i jumped solenoid and nothing. all it does is click..

Starter did it to my chicks 440 would turn over with plugs out but not in but keep trouble shooting

I cleaned all connections to the box, battery, and starter, all are snug. I added a second ground just in case and tried jumping solenoid and got nothing. I know the battery is good even tried jumping with my truck and got the same "Clicking" sound so looks like the starter.
Ya i've been working on it the past few days rain or shine. I even took out the elec box to see if water got in somehow and fried it but no the stuff in there was bone dry looks brand new.. Do you know a good place to buy a starter from, decent price??

I have a minty fresh starter out of a 2004 STX-12F. It looks identical but it does have a different part number. I was only looking to get $70 plus shipping so it may be worth it to ask someone if it will work.

Ya i ride in salt water. How much of PITA is it to get to the bendix?? I thought i had the problem narrowed down to the starter BUT just threw in a brand spankin new one and guess what, SAME exact problem??? The solenoid clicks every time i try and start that's all...

You really need a meter if you plan on working with anything electical. A meter would have told you right away that you either have power to your starter or you don't, if you did have power, and have a good ground, it's the starter or bendix frozen in place (I've never seen this though, but I guess it could happen). I would have pulled the starter and bench tested it by hooking positive to the terminal and ground to the bold lug, if the starter spun, you need to pull the front cover and see what's up with that bendix.
If you didn't have power, you need to figure out why. Test power coming out of the solenoid. If power there, but not starter, you need a new starter cable. If no power, go to the input of the solenoid. If you don't have power there, but power at your battery, you need a battery cable. If you do have power there, either your solenoid is fried (very common) or something isn't allowing it to actuate. You said you hear a click, that's usually the solenoid and my bet as to what's wrong with your ski.
*EDIT* Radio Shack has a digital volt meter for $22.

solenoid??? If the bendix was rusted wouldn't the starter just spin? To get to the bendix, pull your flywheel.

Ya, to be the Bendix, it would have to physically be frozen in the bushings, or something came apart and jammed it. Not likely, but possible.

Like cannibal said best wa is to verify u have power. The click is the solenoid working. They can however burn the contacts and not make the power transfer thru. If u have a meter u can see the battery power on the starter wire when u hit the go button. Then if that is good u can check it at the starter. U prob have a bad wire. U can verify that by removing it and doing a resistance test on it. If it has no resistance its good. If it does then its corroded and not leting the power thru. If it has no reading its broken. Takes all of 5 min to c,heck it out. And u don't have to pull anything, cept maybe a bottle cap after u figure it out and fix it.

Ok so i'm getting no resistance on starter/ground cables, good. So now I'm taking another look at the solenoid. I pulled it and tested the M6 terminals and i'm getting 4.1 ohms with no power applied?? Is this good or bad?? It's been forever since i used a meter!! a little lost..
Got it running finally!!! Turns out after some trial an error the starter turned out ok, the solenoid tested good and all the battery cables tested good after taking off shrink wrap at cable ends and cleaning all corrosion off. Also lots of wd-40!! Thanks everyone for the help!!!
