SXR SXR wont start at all

I have a 2008 SXR and ever since last year it has been glitchy sometimes when I try to start it... Sometimes it does nothing when I push the starter and sometimes it just clicks. Then when I move the battery cables around and try again it fires right up. Earlier today I was riding it and it was running fine and then it started cutting out and just died like it was out of gas and it wouldnt do anything when I push the starter. It was not out of gas and the battery was not dead. I noticed under the hood the wire coming from the bottom of the engine in the very front (Crank?) was melted and had exposed wires showing. I am not sure what that wiring is and if that is my problem but Im sure that is not good having exposed wires... Ive tried searching online for a wiring diagram or help with this issue and Ive had 0 luck.

Someone please help me

If you're talking about what I think you are, those are your stator wires. It's where your ski gets it's spark, timing, charge, etc. You need a new stator/wiring.

How did they melt anyhow?

I have no idea how it melted... I have the wetpipe and those wires are plenty far away from it... Here is a picture of what melted. Does that seem to be reasonable for what I described?photo-21.jpg

Look into those wires and make sure no copper is exposed then wrap them in duct tape. Sounds like you have other loose wires if your moving around wires and it starts!!! Tighten the two wires onto your electrical box and make sure the one touching your starter is tight...next clean off all the connections on your battery and re-tighten them down...if it still does nothing i would probably replace those melted ones.

You may need a little more water in your wetpipe if it's melting wires...turn the screw on top of the pipe out 1/8 of a turn....

You also could have a bad starter if it's clicking.

Well I figured out whats wrong... That wire coming out of the stator into the ebox that melted is the culprit. It is melted the whole way, from the stator all the way into the ebox and was actually snapped in the middle about 6 inches before it enters the ebox... The question is, why did the wire melt itself? I twisted the snapped section together just to see if that was it, and then the ski tried to turn over and everything was fine.

Any thoughts why this happened? Any ideas on what I should do to fix it? I dont think the wetpipe caused this since it is melted the whole way... It looks like the wires got too hot somehow and they melted through the insulation.

Here is a pic of the wire inside the stator cover... Its exposed there too... And the other pic is inside the ebox and you can see the wires got shredded

Can you please ellaborate on that? Why/How you think that could happen and what I should do to fix and prevent that from next time.

Also, when I took out my Ebox, I poured about a cup of water out of it... Im sure that had something to do with it

Are you kidding…..You said it in your post above, "a cup of water" got into you ebox (lay off the 420)….. you have a short from a corroded connection, ect.... pull apart and clean all connections in the ebox, check to see if any wires are frayed, use dielectric grease in all the connections and reassemble. water got in so check the grommets and the plastic caps and stems(they can crack) where the plug wires come out and the starter relay posts come out of the ebox.

Exact thing happened to me.

Battery came loose and fried the stator ground extra crispy. Make sure your terminal connections are tight, I've done some research and it looks like this might be a common issue with SXRs. Run you a replacement wire, solder and shrink in place, and shrink over the cluster of wires for protection. Make sure you get a good connection with the solder. Let me know if you find out what caused yours, curious to see if if could be similar to my rookie mistake.

I have my ski at a freinds house (Great Ski Mechanic) and he is workin his magic right now. I think my issue had a lot to do with the water in the ebox. His initial thought is that it shorted out and the amperage from the starter got sent through the ground which is why it melted. Hopefully it is nothing too crazy. I should know something within the next day or two
