SXR Handlepole topics (aka SXR pole)

Ok, I broke my SXR handlepole last week in the surf and am in the process of fixing it. I'm going to re-glass it because $700 - $1,000 for an aftermarket one right now is not happening. I bailed on a big jump and it broke clean off at the base. I took all the cables off and have the pole free and am now working on getting the base out - but I can't!

For the main bolt that holds the pole to the ski, I got the loose nut on the right side of the ski off, but cannot get the bolt out. I've hit it and a socket wrench connected to it with a 4lb sledgehammer and everything and it's not moving. It's a 19 mm bolt - anybody have any suggestions on how to get it out?

I have been taking pictures and will post as I go along.

Thanks

PS - I just weighed the pole itself (stock sxr pole, stock chin pad, Star bar, grips, Wamilton's throttle lever, and stock turn plate) and total weight using my crappy 2 lb increment bathroom scale is +/- 15 lbs.

I broke my SXR pole in the exact the same place. After I took it off and I was planning on reglassing the end but I found out that after the base/pivot broke off, the steering cable snatched tight and I actually broke the steering cable bracket off of the rest of the pole. Something you might want to check while it's off. You definitely have to unscrew the pivot bolt as the starboard side of the pole bracket is threaded. Mine seemed exceptionally tight. I put some penetrating oil on it to try to stop the aluminum from galling but finally I resulted to using a pipe on a 1/2 drive ratchet. Good luck

not sure what Dale's handlepoles are going for, but i think they are awesome and worth it
plus check around used, never know what may show up, maybe try contacting Blowsion

I put the Dales -2 on her ski and really like it, and now we have a standard length we are trying (need to get her further back in the ride tray)

For your second post, that is some very useful information. Number 1, it tells me I'm not the only one with a exceptionally tight pivot bolt and #2, the pipe for leverage is a good idea.

Carter, once I get it off and get a better look at it, I might decide to hit you up for your used pole. I've got your number around here somewhere. Thanks for looking out man.

I just checked: the Dale's pole is badass, and their "try to break it 2 year guarantee" is nice, but it is also close to $700. That seems to be the going rate.

hate to say it, but that stock kawi pole is a poor design and anyone riding surf should consider replacing it before heading out
thats how she cracked her stock pole and she isnt an aggressive rider either

I didn't know dale's price was so much, i think i pad 450 for mine new, but that was in 05/06
to me it is without a doubt the best designed pole out there that is ULTRA easy to install.... heck even i installed thats how easy it was

but if you need to buy handlebars, turn plate, pole, covers etc... its all gonna add up
this is not a cheap sport by any means

I cheap way to go aftermarket is with AC sj pole. They can be found for around 2 hundy. You will need to macihne some spacers and make your own steering cable bracket. You will also need converstion turn plate & sj pole pad. I run 1 on my surf sxr.

How much of a hassle is it to stick a RN SJ pole on an SXI PRO ?
Just a matter of some spacers and sorting out the turnplate ?

The pole on my PRO is mint but I want something shorter. It helps that I have a few RN poles to play with.

OrlandoGator,

I have the same problem that you do, my pole did not break but it is loose side to side, bad bushings, I went to replace the bushings and I can not get the bolt out either, I put and impact gun on it and that only moved it about an 1/4 turn. I said F-it and will ride it this season with the bad bushings.....as a back up I ordered a dales jet sport pole, it was like $680 - 690 with shipping. Everything OEM bolts right up.... no need for any other parts. It just came yesterday and it looks awesome and strong.

I did pick up a used pole base, pole bolt, spring and pole bracket bumpers just incase I cant get the bolt out of my ski. I am going to wait till it breaks or do the swap over the winter........I just want to ride.

It's not a hassle it just takes time to get the steering cable bracket mounted right so you have full travel each way.

For all you guys with stuck handle pole bolts use heat to free it up.

or maybe soak it in PB blaster

unless the factory put some sort of loctite on it, then it would need to be heated of course
i dont recall having a bolt problem on her SXr
i also just bought some new bushings and the blowsion pole spring too, so need to trim it to make it fit

Yeah like Don 79 TA said, I used PB Blaster on the bolt and then set up my socket on the bolt and kept whacking the handle (because I couldn't find a 1/2" pipe for leverage) with a sledgehammer and it finally freed up enough to loosen it by hand.

I have since fiberglassed the stock pole back together and will be posting pics when I get a chance at home (now at work). I also cut 2" out of the stock pole so I could see what that's like before I buy aftermarket... because we all know that my stock pole will break again.
