SXR Freestyle Build - What do you think?

I'm hoping to add some mods to my new 07' SXR this winter. Just learned to ride about 2 weeks ago and I love it. Here is what I'm planning to do first. Keep in mind I'm only 16 and have little to no experience "wrenching" things.

1. Factory Wet Pipe
2. Flame Arrestors (I don't even know what these are for or if they are necessary. When I was researching, I just noticed that the Wet Pipe and Arrestors usually were added together.)
3. JSU Handpole Spring Tensioner
4. Footwells - Mashers (I don't want to cut out the fiberglass. Are these good? Anyone have them?)
5. Hydroturf Diamond Mat for Mashers
6. Blowsion Carbon Fiber Ride Plate w/ "D cut" (Or try to convince my dad to cut up the stock plate...keep in mind he paid for this ski, he makes the decisions.)

I've been researching this area a lot and feel this is the best start for my level of mechanics. The mods should also keep me going all of next summer.

Let me know what you think.

If you want a aftermarket rideplate, I strongly suggest a Trinity ride plate.... he also offers a 8lb Hood that greatly reduces alot of top weight.... It makes a big difference in the handiling of the ski.... he uses nothing but the best Composites and Epoxy resins.

Not sure on the Mashers.

Just put a good intake grate on and ride the crap out of it. Wait till you are real good riding it stock before you pipe it. Also mashers or lifter wedges are great to start with. I don't think you will need footholds yet. Just my 2 cents.

Listen to this advice. Ride the piss out of it next year and then do a couple things.

A nice Grate would be a TBM intake grate, or a worx intake grate for rec riding. Skat Trak grate is also nice, its more or less identical to the TBM.

You might want some aftermarket bars to pull you forward more. There are ways to shorten a stock pole without cutting it and it works great. I do it on my skis, and its cheap.

Just ride the thing, have fun on it, and learn to be a better rider before throwing a ton of money into it. This way you wont have to work on it much, if at all, besides maintenance.

More parts= more wrenching.

I wouldn't put an intake grate on it. Makes it stick to the water too much.

DO NOT get the mashers. Just wait and put the real ones in. Nobody ever regrets it. Buy a stock rideplate ($30) on ebay and cut it yourself.

Ok. So new list for the winter...

1. FP Wet Pipe
2. JSU Handpole Spring Tensioner
3. Hydroturf mat
4. New Stock Ride Plate w/ D cut

I was looking at hydroturf mats online and they come pre-cut for the SXR or by the sheet. I was wondering whats better the diamond cut by the sheet OR the ones with straight lines that are pre-cut.

I was just gonna buy the pre-cut ones because it seemed easier to instal...but is the diamond pattern better for traction? Also, some of the pre-cut ones come with an extra inch of kick tail...what the heck is kick tail?

I dont know how far you like to ride but a 2 gallon fuel tank cuts lots of weight. Unless you want to compete on your ski i would stick with just a few bolt on mods.

Dont waste money on new turf if yours isnt bad yet, its pointless.

Buy an intake grate. They SUCK without them IMO...and most others. DJKorn is a rare breed.

Dont buy a pipe til after next year. Trust me on that one.

Or you could just run 2 gallons of fuel in a stock tank. Pretty simple idea. SXR's are terrible on gas anyway so theres no need to make your fuel supply smaller.

I'm really not sure why DJ said you don't need an intake grate but you do.
An intake grate keeps the boat hooked up which help with everthing. Skat, TBM, Worx are all good for rec riding.
Like Luke said just gets some bars and intake and ride, ride, ride. Don't worry about what parts to put on, sxr's rip pretty much stock.
I love my 06 stocker and I own a wet piped surf boat & dry pipe limited race boat and I ride my stocker the most.

I usually burn through 2-3 tanks of gas a day on the weekends. So running 2 gallons in the tank wouldn't work. I'm 16 and can take the abuse so i'm out there all day =p

I'm still gonna replace the mat anyway. Is the pre-cut mat with the straight lines fine or should i by the diamond cut by the sheet?

Now that I think about it, my dad probably won't even buy a Wet pipe, especially just after buying this new ski and a Yamaha GP1300r last year.

I guess I'll pay for my own bolt on mods...

New list...

1. Stock ride plate w/ D cut
2. JSU Handpole Spring Tensioner
3. Worx Maxiloader Intake grate (Is this one any good?)
4. Hydroturf Mat

Anything else necessary for BASIC freestyle. Oh yeah, I ride on Lake Michigan...so its RARELY flat. I ride on anything from little chop to 8 footers. This might help decide what aftermarket parts to use.

The worx maxiloader is a good grate for sure.

The straight cut and diamond cut and stock turf all has the same "grip." They just look different. If you do replace the mat, get the sides with lifters that glue in...you can somewhat lock your toes under, and its better than nothing. I have them on all of my race sxr's and love them.

Buy some UMI 0 degree bars, and you'll need some grips. It makes a big difference.

Don't touch your engine like stated before, just ride it til the sun goes down. I run 4 or 5 tanks a day at my cottage on weekends, and the same throughout the week. Kart Tanks are stupid unless your eric malone and you can actually do things where it WILL make a difference.

Maybe a bilge pump incase you have any accidents on lake michigan...but I wouldn't worry too much about it
