sxi help

Hey im pretty new to this whole freestyle thing but i really want to get into it. I just bought a 1996 sxi with a factory pipe (limited), foot holds, primer, home made limiting rope. But it has some performace problems, it doesnt seem to have any top end, we had to replace a gasket on the pipe, the old one ripped and sprayed water in the hull on the first ride until it was almost full! If you have any suggestions let me know. Also i want to get into some freestyle, mostly flat water. I just ordered a 8/16 prop (not swirl) and a wet wolf cone. Is this ok? I got a great deal on it so i took it. I know everyone says to go 9/17 swirl but the 8/16 was there. any advice will be appreciated!

As far as the performance, I think im guna have to take it out onto the frozen river to see what is really wrong with it, or wait until spring to get it into a shop...Does anyone out there run a 8/16 with a cone? Anyone got any more freestyle tips? I got about 200 bucks, (im not even 16) so im guna keep it to a minimum. thanks

I forgot!
you can get better reeds and jsu angled reed spacer for longer reed life and a cool 3hp gain, 9/17 swirl is the prop for that ski but try what you got, also bore the reduction nozzle, and fill in the voids in the pump shoe yourself for better hookup. remove chokeplates and add airfilters if not done already. shorten the handpole by 3 inches or so and that should make your ski feel a little more freestyle oriented without spending much $$$

if you pull the pump out it is the part that is in front on it that seals the pump to the hull, there are little trianular voids on the back side of it that hold air and will feed that air into the pump upon accelaration. you can buy a kit from blowsion to fill them in or fill it in yourself with 3m5200 or something else like it to get rid of the voids. also you can shave the pole pad down to make it more sleek. Little cheap mods that will improve your ski are good if you don't have the cash for the bling products.

Get a Job, then you can spend all the money you want on your ski.:cool2:

id love to help with your probem but need more info.
I wouldnt get a pole until yours shows signs of breakage. It will take a while.
A pole conversion is way more than 200 bucks anyway. ANd when you are ready, do a Super jet conversion. It makes the 750 look skick with even a stock Super JEt pole.
Your impeller should work ok, Im not sure with your elevation tho. I wouldnt put the large Exit nozzle on with that impeller. Your engine might wrap up too quick, that also will bring more heat.
EXAMPLE, Putting way too small of tires on a stock vehicle. It will rev quick, but max out soon

For 200 bucks i would get some bars and grips, depending on your size and weight.

BTW,

Welcome to the X, and get more of your friends into standups

can you post some pics

Yankee, I know this ski... Just no top end power. Sounds great on the trailer.
The carbs have been through twice, even replaced the fuel pump..
Engine is at 145psi both front and back.
Sorry about the exhaust gasket, never had that problem.
The pole is rock solid (like new) I had custom bushings made for it.
I asked your dad if he new Kawi's cause I trouble shot that power band problem for the whole summer. I never did dig into the electrical (maybe flywheel timing or cdi/coil).
I also striped a parts sx here and it had a umi block off plate on the engine drain at the bottom of the motor. Someone after I sold it suggested I should of checked the drain value for an air leak. If you pull the motor, I'll send you the block off plate.
May want to check the reeds too. (?)

Good luck, welcome to the world of wrenching.

yea, my elevation is at 500ft. I weight 120, bench 155, and am bout 5'6 ish. As far as the engine problem, i dont know how to explain it cuz the river is frezing so i cant get it out to see how it runs, so i gotta wait till the water warms up. If anyone lives by harrisburg let me know, im pretty much alone. Ill take sum pics of the ski but ill need a while, im tryin to build a trailer, and fix the ski up all at the same time. I was guna get that nozzle so at least i got one if i ever wanted to add it. but like i said...not till spring

hey derm, this ski is a 96 sxi, we got it from a guy in chesapeake virginia (maybe u know him) his name was lance lindquist or sumthin? does surf in virginia beach? but u practically described my ski with the 145 compression and such. I think my dad n i are going to try to tune the carbs . If that doesnt fix it, were guna look for an air leak. but we think the last resort is pull the engine. We got the documentation on how to set the pipe up, and we'll go from there.

Make sure your coil wires are broken off at the ends. Sometimes they will fire when not under a load making you think it's fine. Clip the ends if there is room.

hahaha! small world eh derm? so i guess we know where to start, coil wires, drain valve, electrical, reeds. Derm, how did u leave the set screws on the carbs? Does it still have factory jets? Kx454, hold off on that nozzle, but i may take u up on it later in the summer...
Yea derm, the water up here is pretty cold this time of year.
