Or stand with your feet side by side and have someone push you from behind. The foot you step forward with is usually your prominant one.

nick, have you ever ridin a surfboard, skateboaad or snowboard goffy? I seem to be more comfortable in switch stance also.
Too all the leftys out there, what side do you feel more comfortable rolling too?Hard hard was it to learn to roll or stab to the oppisite side?

kenney and i had a good convo about surf stance. he thinks its essential for any good surf rider. im pretty sure joe is goofy and he rolls to the left, so as long as you roll to the left, nick, i think that goofy would be good for you.

it doesnt matter if your goofy or not, you can roll to both left and right no matter what your stance is. Goofy is just a persons preference, it does not dictate which way you will roll or not

Oh yeah, heres a picture of some wakeboard sandal style bindings I google searched. Mine are similair. I think this would to the trick honestly. You can bolt the binding down and adjust it as you like, with all of the different holes! and you can get rid of the starp on the back for easy entry/exit

theres a link to a website that sells these straps. hyperlite might even have some themselves, possibly cheaper

I use one of the high roller holds in the front. This is the best set up by far IMO. It doesnt matter which foot you have foreward, and your not committed to one postion like with a strap. I do most of my rolls surf stance now. I don't even put my rear foot in the hold when I ride, or roll surf stance.
When I do a roll surf stance, my front foot is almost sideways under the front hold, and when I do a re-entery my front foot is painted foreward. That Highroll hols is so versitile!! It took a couple rides to get used to, but I would put that on any stand up I buy from here on out.
Here's a pic.

well its easier to do a front flip than a backflip on a trampoline. and when youre standing sideways like that it seems like your body is doing more of a flip than a roll. but these are all just observations so what do i know.

Where did you get that from? Do they still sell them?

I bought it about a year ago on that "other site". Board member Highroller made them. I think is company is Highrolloer Customs, or something. Apparently he does not make them anymore because Blowsion or someone else said they had a patend on it, or something wierd. Not sure of the whole story.
Anyway, I digress, Post in the freestyle section and ask id anyone has one they want to sell. Thats how I got mine. It wasn't even used! I dunno if highroller is on this site or not. Good Luck

My ridding style on a SJ is SurfStyle all the way. Those backflips and rolls are cool but IMO slicing/shredding a wave all the way into shore, big re-entry, off-the-lip with 40ft roosters is very rewarding and smooth. A wave is usefull more than just when it peaks (like when setting up for jumps).

I even enjoy letting the wave break, jumping over the backside (bigger the better), turning (leg dragging) back into the fluffy and exploding into the face.

I would be completely lost without the stock fire extinguisher canister on my square-nose. I jam my (left) toes into it and use it all the time as leverage! I'm at the point where I can't freeride without it.

A final thought, if you do decide to change anything it will probably feel weird at first, it might take 5-10 rides to really be able to take advantage of it. Its easy to say F it and go back without it, but if you stick with it and don't get discouraged it will pay off. For straps you will probably have to experiment with a bunch of different locations and strap adjustments until it feels right.

I always thought glassing or bolting a peice of pvc or some other pipe arcross the front of the tray and turfing it would make a decent front foothold. Put it just low enough and far enough forward so you could kick your tows under it and almost reach the front of the tray.

thanks for all the helpful posts... I'm getting closer to figuring out the best setup for me...

loving the front foothold idea....

btw - I'm diggin that setup Enzo.... Can you explain exactly how ya did it???

Slutty, thanks for posting this. I think I'm going to go the strap route soon too, but I'm going to try and figure how to do it with footholds also. And here is why...

I love the way rolls and flips look surf stance, and those are the only two things I do with both feet in the holds. But I do feel that you have way more leverage over the ski on flips and rolls when you use a foot holds. I think that makes rolls and flips on really small waves that much easier.

On of the other problems I have with the strap idea is that I don't like to be locked in a surf stance, I like the abality to step around and I tend to move my feet a lot. When I've ridden boats with straps in the past, I always seem to step on the staps and they sort of get in the way. Granted a front hold would take care of that problem on the front.

Something else to consider is that if you are going big surf stance, and landing hard then you are more than likely going to be taking a lot of lateral pressure on your knees, as opposed to having your legs together and taking the impact more vertically (if that makes any sense). Then again, you are not taking such a serious impact to the tib/fib when you come up short on rolls or over rotate stabs...

Lots to consider...good thread.

Ride hard, put away wet!
remember surf stance contributed alot to Taylor breaking his ankle when he landed a very hard roll a few years back, thats what he thought
