Super Jet Superjet Options and Questions, Newbie

Hey guys,

Been searching all over the net and I have seen how helpful this forum has been for allot of people. I have a few questions which I hope you can help me with.

I currently have a 1991 SJ650, I got it very cheap through a family member, and been riding it no problem for 2 years.

I would like to get a newer model, there are a few 2nd hand ones but so far the only one that caught my eye was a 2002 Yamaha Superjet that seems fairly new and stock. Should I consider taking the risk or should I rather buy a new 2012/3 which our dealers have in stock. I come from a Racing background riding Motocross/Motard for 12 Years where I know never to buy 2nd hand things to race. I will try upload photos of the ski but worst case scenario what kind of long term maintenance would I need to do on a model that is that old? It looks very clean but seems to have been standing for a long time! The price for this one is 30K vs a new one 85K. South African rands, so the currency is different.

I will not be racing but would like to have a ski that will last for years without any problems, also would like to mod it obviously aswell.

Please help me make up my mind!

that thing looks clean!!! check the midshaft bearing, make sure it is not blown out and signs of it being re-greased, check the bottom of the hull for cracks??? Did someone drop it? pull plugs do compression test... by the looks of it, someone bought it and just never got around to using it much... Check it out from top to bottom and i would say you just saved yourself 55K rands ...

That's a real clean sj. Buy that for sure You can bring the black plastic in the tray and rear corners with a heat gun

You guys definitely sure I shouldnt look at a 2008 and UP model? Would I enjoy this one as much? IM not racing, just Freestyle and fun!

I bought the Ski! The hull has a little damage underneath which I would like to repair but the motor is completely stock and very clean! Some reason there isnt a choke and just a bulge switch, will have to add a few things. Thanks for the helpl! Will post pictures soon, got lots of plans for this ski!

Glad you got it. Now lets get this party started. If you are gonna be doing glass on the bottom you should install footholds at the same time.

Im busy ordering from blowsion, problem is getting all the stuff to South Africa, when it arrives here at our local post it normally gets stolen! So I have to use the expensive DHL options! It is a 2002 model, but very min hours im guessing around 30-40 hours. Do I need to strip the pump or take the engine out to inspect any bearings or anything? What would you guys recommend?

Also what other site's besides blowsion should I look at for parts for my SJ?

Just had my first ride !!! A few strange things though , the ski started fine but after driving to the dam and filling the tank it almost felt like the motor was stuck? Not sure what cause that but after a few try's it slowly started turning over, could it be because the previous owner hardly used it and it stood for so long ? Also there isn't a choke or primer , will install primer soon as it arrives .

I can't believe the top speed difference compared to my old
ski, there is a rattle while going straight and flat out , sort of in the centre of the ski ? Could it be bearings in the pump shaft ? It isn't the motor and doesn't always do it, where should I start checking ?

Hey guys, Busy stripping to replace the pump bearings, I would like to ask, it is a 2002 SJ , from the look of it it has very few hours. I will eventually like to modify the engine , Factory pipe, Head, Porting and maybe big bore/porting. I would like to know how reliable the cranks are in these Ski's? Should I plan on a crank rebuild or just leave it? Is a hot rods crank a good replacement?

You're not gonna know anything about the engine unless you take it apart. Was the rattle a vibration or just clunking? May be a good idea to check your motor mounts as well. As stated numerous times before check out jetmaniac he is the man!
