superjet idling video...

bought this jet the other day, got a great deal on it, couldnt pass up. Now ill be taking it apart and checking everything and changing a few thing. I decided to take a little video of it before it goes under construction.

The started doesnt engage at all times, im wondering if i should just get a new one or try to take this one to get rebuilt. The smoke inside the engine compartment im not sure where its coming from, but my guess is one of the coupling is either loose or cracked. Does anyone else notice the engine jumping around to much while the RPMs decelerate, could be bad engine mounts or do all hi performance engines move around this much? comparing to my stock 99 it doesnt do this. Aslo smoking a bit to much, either the guy mixed it with to much oil or because it didnt warm yet.

Looks like you may be leaking exhaust at the manifold to pipe fitting. (Think it's common on those pipes.)
If I had to guess, I'd also say you have a broken motor mount or 2 based on the way the carbs were shaking at the 35sec mark. Try lifting up on the motor by hand & see if you can move it.

What did you end up paying for that if you dont mind me asking?
you probally have a few broken motor mounts...probally gonna have to take the pipe out and get a good look...is that pipe even mounted to the head??

pull the exhaust and motor out.....start at the mounts and work your way up......sell that dry pipe(biggest pain in the ass) get a limited b pipe...

That engine is rocking quite a bit front to back usually they pull from side to side when given light throttle applications. From the way it's accelerating I would say that you are running uneven compression or the crank is out of phase. Did you do a compression test before you bought the ski?

Pull up on the engine around the bed plates and see if you have any split mounts.

paid $3200, jet itself has over $3,000 in parts here and there, i gotta get to the motor mounts first lol! The pipe is mounted to the head with 2 rubber type mounts so thats why its jumping around so much, i dont think there is a solid mount on these pipes because im sure it would snap off. B pipe is what i was gonna put on my 99SJ, and i might sell this pipe we will see, it does come with water injection so im sure this thing will snap like crazy, but B pipes look hidden and much cleaner.

I didnt do a compression test on the engine, its one of those tings, people dont like it when you take their engines part to test something before you buy, but ill be doing a compression test on it as well

When I was looking at that ski months ago, I was told there is a difference of like 13psi between the cyclinders. I hope I am wrong, do a compression test.

When buying a ski if someone has a problem with you doing a compression test just walk away. That means red flag, just my .02 cents.

thats what it was selling for months ago...if the motor needs work its not that great a deal...assuming the pole is stock lenght

Those pipes run extremely strong on the top end and if that ski has dual 38s with large main jets, I would bet money the engine has had more than a few lean seizures. The 38s just don't flow enough fuel on the top end because they only have one fuel pump and most people run them with the stock 1.5 needle & seats with large mains with that exhaust.

someone had to buy it to take care of it, i figured it would be me, since most people are mechanicaly challanged and all they wanna do is rev and go. let me see if i can list all the things on this jet and estimate the prices to see where i stand

ODI grips $20
Umi Bars $60
Blowsion chin cover $50
Umi pole $550
Black front bumper and all black trim $200
Bilge pump kit $110
Hydro turf precut $130
Blowsion tubbies $280
Works ride plate $140
Works intake $130
Factory 9 exhaust $800
MSD water injection $245
New battery $50
TDR water box $200
Carbon reinforced sides $100
Flush kit $50
Hood seal $100
Water filter inline $15
MSD water injection solenoid $100

total $3,330

and since i paid $3,200 for it, i think i have a win situation even if it has problems. I will end up parting some things and getting some money back, putting some things to stock, including possibly the pole, waterbox and going to B-pipe, so i will not need the water injection. The jetski will feel loved and feel at home... win win situation :cheer:

if there is a problem, fix it. done deal. If you are happy with what you paid then it was a good deal no matter what. it looks nice and if it needs a b pipe do it up and drop the dry (dont forget to have the x metal pipe mod done to it though). Have fun and get on the water. it looks good to me.

It's a nice looking ski for the money and the modifications. Some people think it's the end of the world when a jet-ski has low compression; but it's just a new beginning. Also it's not really that expensive for a new set of pistons and to have the cylinders bored out especially if you do the work yourself.

The starter problem is most likely your starter bendix. It's a pretty common problem on Yamaha's. They get a little rust on them and then they won't throw out to engage against the flywheel.

You're starter sounds fine - you notice you can hear it spin, but there is no load on it. Replace that, and I think you'll be good - but be prepared to pay if you can't find a good used one. DO NOT BUY A BENDIX THAT HAS ANY RUST ON IT!!!! If you do, you're gonna wind up with the same problem.

just ran compression test on both my skis the white one got 135 on both cylinders, kinda low. My blue stock one got 150 on both. i wanted a project, so i got a project lol :] and i also wanted a 96-97 white one to work on and make it fancy... i guess here we go! :woot:

the bendix is on its way out...that needs to be replaced or it will end up exploding and take out EVERYTHING in the front cover

you definatly have broken mounts (or at least loose)....the smoke is fine, and the motor sounds good!

do i have to order bendix through yamaha dealer? or is this a part i can get from most places online that sell superjet parts? or ONLY yamaha since i need OEM one, and how much? i wonder if im better off with a used starter

bendix is the SAME for most yam, kaw and polaris...there are a couple of exceptions though

I know paul lehr has them..I cant remember how muchie though, or try LEGDRAG.com

135 is pretty low. I bought a supposedly running and freshly rebuilt motor from SJK and it only had 135 on it. Turned out the piston ring gaps were twice what they should be, the jugs/pistons were all scored up, and there was no base gasket. Some guys say 135 isn't that bad but I'd check out the top end if I were you.
