It had good compression for one of two reasons. I had added a little oil to the jugs for preservation or they didn't stick until I got it running and then they stuck. Who knows at this point. I need to read up up taking ring gap measurements and I'll get back with the results.

put the ring in the bore.

push a piston in to square it up, and measure the end gap.

do it oriented parrallell and opposite of the piston pin to see if the bore is egg shaped.

I removed the rings and it appears there was a little oil coking on the ends of the rings. I used some 2000 grit paper and it came right off. My end gap appears to be .012 on each ring if I measured properly. Does that sound right?
I'm thinking of simply buying new rings and cleaning the grove in the pistons. The pistons and bore look good enough to not require a bore.

I'm glad you say that. I checked the tolerances and it's supposed to be between .008 and .016 or something like that. I used 2000 grit and polished the rings and cleared out the grove. I put the rings back in and everything seems to move free now. I conferred with a builder and he stated I should be good to go and just to keep an eye on the compression before and after a start and keep a good trend analysis.
I've got the required gaskets on their way and I should be good to go soon. I'll post up once it's running. The power of positive thinking!

You may want to ~lightly~ coat the rings w/premix oil at assembly.:cool2:
I plan on it! I was thinking of a light coat of oil on the cylinders as well.

Mouth, I got all my gaskets from AJS. I think the base gasket was $5 and the exhaust was even less. Jim has been quite helpful in this whole ordeal as well as you, SkiDaddy and a couple others. Mucho appreciation.

We have brap!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I ended up polishing the rings and grooves to remove the bit of gunk where the rings kept hanging. Zimmy came by last night to help me set the rings while installing the jugs, did a compression check and I had 150 and 138. I knew one of the rings was still stuck so I disassembled it today and cleaned the grove better. Had to have the wife help me reinstall the jugs, it is her ski after all and I'm back up to 148.:Banane01:

She helped me get everything installed, wires back in the looms and all the other grooming and when we went to start, it did.:arms:

I let it run a bit and then did another compression check and it came back 150/148.

Next stop, water test but it sounds so damn good. Here's some photos of the completed build.

Thanks Honey!!! Also thank you to everyone who helped figure out the problem. Joel's been working on the ski for 3 weeks straight and I'm glad that's over with.:woot:

Per your quote hunchen....it's my ski "and I helped".:cool2:

For the rings, I used some 2000 grit paper to start with but some of the heavier carbon and crap needed a coarser grit and then I finished it with the 2000 again. I laid the rings flat to keep from bending them. The grooves were done with the same paper but I folded it to get inside the groove. I had to use a razor blade to get some of the deposits off and then finish it with the paper. It was tedious to clean and fit over and over but when the rings were compressed and released, it seemed good.

You can test fit the rings and see if they will stick. It was pretty obvious on mine once the jugs were off.
