stupid question - squarenose coupler

I built a 61x motor using some parts from a 6m6.

When I removed the engine-side coupler from my 6m6 to put on the 61x, it didn't have a "cap" on it like the midshaft-side coupler did. I think the previous owner must have lost it or something, because the yamaha parts catalog shows that its supposed to be there (see 6m6.jpg).

But the 61x's don't have a cap on their couplers (see 61x.jpg).

So given that I'm using a 61x crank and a 6m6 coupler, should I order a "cap"?

Or is it even important enough to worry about. Could I just make sure the center of the coupler stays covered with marine grease whenever I pull the motor? I assume the grease is there just to prevent corrosion on the threads.

My 61x has caps on the engine coupler and midshaft. I wouldn't really consider them to be a water tight seal but maybe they help keep some water out. If I was missing one, I wouldn't order one for sure.

I wouldn't order one, but I would definitely put a healthy amount of anti seize on the threads. Then maybe goop some grease in the hole once it's on :naughty:

The cap on the engine side helps reduce corrosion by keeping water off the threads. The mid-shaft cap is much more important, it the only thing keeping grease in the shaft and water/debris out. The cap has an O-ring in it and works very well.

you can always post a "want to buy" thread
and hope someone has some laying around he will let go for cheap

Yeah - I will probably be leaning over the motor the first time it starts so I would probably get an eye-full. I will make sure its a light coat of grease.

I'll go post a want-to-buy thread right now.

Thanks..
