Stripped steering cable holder threads on X-metal pole... help

What do you think I can do here? The threads are stripped where the cable holder bracket screws into the pole. I don't really see being able to tap it larger because the bottom of the hole is already paper thin.

Maybe there is a tiny bit larger standard size bolt thread that I can tap into there without having to drill the hole any larger???

Any ideas would be appreciated. I wanted to try to ride on Sunday. I haven't been out in like 3 months.

I woke up this morning with these same thoughts.

Not sure exactly what I'll do yet.

On a side note, this pole is corroding like crazy. I knocked off most of the powder coating at the bottom of the pole struggling to get it back on the handle pole bracket last night.

If I buy one again, I'll try to buy it without coating, and I'll have it ceramic coated.

had the same problem with mine - except mine pulled out while riding.

I cut a new "ear" out of flat aluminum stock.

for the bolt - I used a stainless hex-head cap screw - same diameter, but about 1/2" longer with a nut on the inside of the pole.

you have to grind one side of the nut so it will clear the steering cable - and put red loctite on it just to be make sure it does not come off. I needed the longer screw so I could get my fat fingers in there to get the nut started.

I hope a nut and bolt will be my last option. I know I'd probably drop the nut down the pole like 10 times before I actually get it threaded.

I did drop the nut several times at first - then put the longer bolt in there and it helped. It's held up fine for me.

I do have extra bolts, pre-ground nuts, and "ears" in my parts box in case it happens again.

When it first let go, it was at the beach - so that was what we came up with to save the weekend, and I haven't had reason to try and improve on the situation.

If you need to have the pole re-powdercoated anyway...weld, drill and re-tap is probably your best bet.

call around - I found a local shop that offered to powdercoat it for $25
