Stiff throttle Q's, tight carbs

I am trying to lighten the throttle pull on my 96 SJ. I pulled one of the return springs off my carbs like on my 07 but the butterfly linkage doesn't move smooth and 1 spring isn't enough to get it to close.

Most rebuild kits don't include those parts anyway so how does one go about replacing/checking the bushings? Everything is smooth so i doubt wear is the issue. Can one get those screws out of the butterfly without twisting them off?

most likely it is not your springs but your cable is worn causing friction.

I thought that too, so i ordered a new cable and swapped it out last weekend only to find it's in the carbs. I pulled them off and srayed some silicone down into the throttle shafts but it made no difference.

Both carbs feel tight like they aren't broken in yet. They are smooth, just tight like a new bearing is when you first install it.

I sent a boat over to a friend for a coupel of tweaks a few months ago...one of the things he did was unwind the throttle return spring 1 rotation...

it lightened up the throttle pull by AT LEAST 50%...made it feel like a HUUUUUUUUGE jump in compression

you could be having a butterfly that is scrubbing on one side.may trying adjusting your connecting linkage.

if that does not work, unwind the spring like KODI said!!!!!!!!!

I seperated the carbs and each feels about the same, I didn't look down to see if the butterflies were rubbing so i will do that.

I run a single spring between dual 38's on my 07 and it is perfect. I guess I could try a single spring but wind it up an extra rotation as well, That might be the ticket, if not I'll try two springs "unwound" 1 rotation each.

Never tried that but I may. I use a Mt. bike lever because it offers better leverage making the throttle easier and therefore pulls faster.

I removed the inside spring last night and wound the outside one an extra wrap but it ends up being just as hard to pull.

I'm going to pull them and send them to JSS for some lovin after this weekend. :biggrin:

Someonesaid that I may be able to remove some of the thin centering washers on the butterfly shaft. I'll give it one more try before I send them out. If they go out then it's for a taper Bore mod and some other tricks too.
