Starters gone wild... strange problem

1. bet on water getting in the spliced wires.. I'm betting he just butt joined them without useing water proof connectors.. if it was salt water it could do all kinds of neat things but even fresh water will draw current threw them to complete the circut (just like pushing the button and having it stick)
2. he was lucky the bendix didnt kick in...
3. the spark plugs, fuel lines wont stop it..

the fix..
1. lube your bendix
2. install GOOD water proof connectors (MSD makes them) or replace the start/stop swtich and keep the wires complete !! (stock is best)

Grifnasty,

Trust me in that I'm only trying to be helpful and I am not criticizing you, but based on the questions that you are asking I think you need to be working closely with someone who has worked on a Yamaha electrical system before. To properly troubleshoot this, you should have a multimeter (simple needle type is fine) and it would help to have the Yamaha Service Guide too (for the schematic).

With these in hand, using the multimeter, you can check the operation of the starter switch in a matter of a few seconds.

Where you cut the wires for the start switch. I would suggest to either recut and install heat-shrink tubing or get a set of waterproof connectors like the ones used on the CDI inside the electrical box, especially if you are in a salt environment. You can get these connectors from www.jetskisolutions.com.

I'd also recomend giving John at Jetski Solutions a call. He may be able to help you over the phone or suggest someone in your area to help you.

Good luck,

Joe

Heres a picture of the start stop switch..
the seal around the start button is busted up..
i alos might add that the start button is alot easier/softer to press than the firm/crisp off button

Also took out the brain box.. it was competly dry! i know its been out of the water for 24hrs but doesent look like any water has ever been in there... in the picture i have the Noid.. thing looks new.. but i do not see a way to open it up and clean the pistons...?

alos when taking the cover off, i yanked one of the IGNITION cables out of the IGNITION COIL ASSY. now how do i fix this? doesent appear the wire was riped out or anything.. looks as it was just slid back in place and glued/sealed in place? so will it be fine to do so?

looking at these pictrues.. now what do you guys think?

yes. theyre identical.

the relay in your pic isnt an oem relay. id lose it. also, i think the ripped boot around the button is the source of your troubles.

woohoo! you have an MSD enhancer. youre a star!

Put 12 V on the small red (brown?) wire, and GND on the small black wire. You should hear a click. Also, you should measure zero resistance (or close to zero) across the big terminals.
