Super Jet Starter Not Engaging?

Okay so I have a 90 SN 650 and when i went to start it up today it sounded like the starter wasn't engaging. It wasn't turning over the motor just kind of spinning or atleast that is what it sounded like to me. After a few minutes it decided to work and started right up. Worked perfectly when I put it away last and never gave me a bit of problem. So whats the deal? Is this something I should worry about or maybe a normal problem?

Your bendix aka starter drive is the problem. You should remove and inspect/lubricate it or replace it. If it stuck once, it will again.

Okay so I've been doing alittle reading and I'm still unclear on how much I have to remove. Will the gas tank give me enough room? Also wheres the place to get a new bendix? I would prefer a new one but if finding a good used one will save me alot of dough I'd be happy to go that route. Any suggestions on where to buy or maybe advice on what to buy as far as OEM, aftermarket, or used.

Moisture in front cover area or low voltage/amps will cause problem...do not buy an aftermarket bendix even if new junk....better to buy a used oem.

Is cleaning mine an option? If so any suggestions on how to clean it?

Pulling the flywheel means a puller tool and a flywheel lock.
i need to do a Hendrix too, hoping I can wait til winter

I don't have tools or new bendix yet. And she starts after a couple attempts. It's not laziness, it's strategic haha

One of the guys we ride with had the same problem last weekend and there was about 15 teeth missing on the bendix

I understand the puller but why do I need the fly wheel lock? Can I rig something? maybe a piece of wood? Impact wrench to take the fly wheel bolt/nut off then torque it to 75 ft/lbs when installing it and thats where I need the lock?

Mine did the same thing recently. Pulled the bendix out, nothing wrong... :thinking:
Clean it, lube it, slap it back together I guess.

When pulling the cover, make sure you don't loose the *washer|spring|washer* (Mine only had one washer, buddy said the missing one might be my problem) that sits in the flywheel cover. You'll know what i'm talking about when you pull it. Gasket should only be necessary if you tear yours taking it off. So be careful.... mmmmkay...

It sounds difficult, but its not. Stuff rope in the front spark plug hole or use a impact to remove the nut. After you apply some tension with the flywheel puller, tap the flywheel with a mallet etc. It should pop off. Don't lose the Woodruff key. Its a little metal hooptie that looks like a half moon. You may know this stuff, but just in case. :fing02:

Well I tore into this weekend and got her all fixed up. My bendix came out in a giant ball of gunk and trash. The biggest hang up was my fly wheel did not want to let go. Destroyed a puller in the process but got it off, everything went smooth from there on thanks to everyone's help and advice!
