Starter amp draw...

Anybody know what the starter amp draw is on a Super Jet?

I need some battery cables and around here all I can get is either 4 gauge, or 8 gauge. I know on here it's recommended to use 6 gauge.

Also, I'd like to use some quick connects (Anderson style, or as McMaster calls them, North American Style) and the ones I'd like to get are rated at 50 amps. Will this do?

Ive got a few sets of those 50 amp rated quick connects ( grey, male femal mating ends?)

the conductors are easily larger than the stock starter wire, or any other connector in the system, they will hold the load.

6 ga on the stock ones.................I used 6 on my 200# compression TL boat with no issues at all. Works sweet and holds up well.

we were talking this weekend about negative ground connections...and actually how much resistance you get with attatching the neg to the starter, vs. somewhere else on the cases

maybe but, the starter is the highest current draw on your boat, might as well connect there. You can always run another ground strap somewhere else on the cases if you want.

I run a redundant ground to the intake manifold throttle cable bracket bolt...not wanting to have a bad ground in heavy surf....test shows it will crank with main starter ground disconnected.....

Exactly....................

On my TL ski I have a ground stud on the firewall, and the cable goes right to the starter from there. All the other stuff goes to the stud as well. That way everything is pretty much right on the battery.

Its a little cleaner now than in that pic, that was just a rough in for testing as the motor was bought not running and I wanted to test it asap..........

Good to hear those 50 amp connectors will work. I'll be making my own cables and going with a bulkhead ground as well for the TL. I messaged a local guy to see if he'd let me come over and test the cranking amps of his ski. If I do get it, I'll post it up for you guys.

Well, I just went to that guy's house and measured his starter amp draw and found that initial cranking spikes would hit 205 and prolonged cranking would draw 125 amps. His starter has a fresh rebuild (local guy) and it sounded like it cranked pretty fast. It might be beefed up a little.

Doesn't look like those 50 amp connectors are going to cut it. Going to have to get some higher rated ones. The next size up is a 120A rated connector and does have lugs for 6 gauge wire.
