I vote Port A,few reasons. 1. I can make Port A easier as I have more excuses to go there then just to ride skis. HAHA.. but seriously,I havent been to CB but from the pics Ive seen it always looks flater then Lake Austin. Ive ridden Port A 3 times and have always had surf, and the flat days where bigger then what Ive seen in pics.

Now it is cool having some who lives at the spot to be kinda the center of the madness. So CB is good for this.

Even if its super flat at Port A you can go closer to the channel where it bunches up and makes some swells. Beach camping is just like at CB where you need a pass in some areas. Port A has a few bars that are kinda cool to go unwind or windup(your choice).

The good news, our black out dates at work have been lifted so I can most likely make this next one and actually be there for a saturday! So where ever it is,,,Ill be there

edit....

just saw the actual riding pics and the waves looked decent, plus that rig in the background would make for some nice racing!

SO,what ever,when ever

Shawn, thanks for chiming in. I think we'll just have to organize a "Far South Texas" ride at some point next year. I know a lot of Austinites would be down with Port Aransas or even futher south.

I see there's an overwhelming majority for Crystal Beach. I'm sure every local voted for it to stay. Honestly, I don't know how you others who drive so far don't want to visit other spots on the coast that might be more aesthetically pleasing and have just as much stuff to do and be easier to get to. I'm sure there are lots of spots where pit bikes can be ridden at night in the sand. But if its all about the drinking for most of you, being able to stumble somewhere familiar, and a free place to stay at Penguin's or the "Loaner" across the street, then I guess that makes sense to me.

Neil, on Yahoo Maps, its 1117 miles from Denver to CB (going around ferry) and 1133 miles to Port A. Surfside is closer than both. SPI is 1245 and Pismo 1209. 1100 miles and 1200 miles seems all the same to me, so I don't know why you bring that up.

great - move it to Port A

which one of ya'll is going to do all the recon?

don't forget, Port A has a ferry to deal with also...and from what I understand, there is no way to drive around it.

I bring it up because as you know, the surf in Cali is SURF!!!, not Gulf chop. To drive that far it helps to have guaranteed surf - thats why I am going to Pismo again and did not bother w/ CB in Sept.
That said, the fact that we are welcome in CB and have seen nearly no hassle with the law (I'm talking about riding not drinking). And I know, surf is far from guaranteed in CB, but we take the chance and always get plenty of riding and good times.

Now as for distances going somewhere else in TX, I'm all for closer and easier access (something CB does not offer). Could care less about aesthetically pleasing, and people can drink anywhere. So if someone wants to scope out a new locale, then they better get on it... seems like last time this was discussed it was at the last minute and there was no chance of changing it without going to the new spot "blind". The last thing I want to do is drive 1100-1200 miles and get kicked out the first day for riding my noisy, polluting, dolphin killing 2-smoke water-scooter. :irked:

Don't get your panties in a bunch. CB is obviously winning, so I'm sure when you have your party next year, people will come. :)

From http://www.superiorsurfboards.com

The Port Isabel/South Padre Island area is without a doubt the most powerful and consistent place for surf on the Texas gulf coast. The reason is simply that the continental shelf is closest to land at this point, plus it is located where it catches North, East, and South swells..

The Port Aransas/Corpus Christi area has numerous good breaks with many various quality waves.

At the north end is San Jose Island. You need to catch the ferry or have a boat to get there. This is one of the finest shaped waves on the coast on a good day. Takes a really large a powerful east to south swell to work. Then an offshore wind really cleans it up. This was Nat Youngs' favorite break on this coast. Kind of finicky and tricky to catch with power.

Surfside Beach Produces some of the better, more consistant surf on the upper Texas coast. It works on small swells and hold double overhead and better. Two factors are responsible for this fact: deep water and long jetties.

This website didn't talk about Crystal or Bolivar specifically, but didn't seem to have too many great things to say about Galveston surfing.

I think my point is, CB, been there, done that. There must be as nice or better places to go do and see. I'm only going to drive to the Texas coast a couple times a year, and making CB the same spot I wind each time is pretty lame to me. I need variety.

The only thing more evil is the WetBike!!!

Hope that was directed at Penguin & not me... my panties are thong - no bunching.
I can definitely see your side Christian, and correct me if I'm wrong, but you obviously don't care for CB nor for it's notorious party scene which I can respect. I think we should save this argument (I use that term jokingly) for 2 weeks from tonight... on the beach... in Cali.... :bigok: :Banane35:

Drive to Corpus and cut over the island that way.

The best waves in Texas are at South Padre Island, near Port Isabel . It is simply the most consistent spot. If you want to be serious about surfing in Texas this is going to have to be one of your stops...

Matagorda is another good surf spot near the river mouth of the Colorado river. Here the beach is steeper and the sandbars more defined. The waves here are generally more hollow and break with more power coming out of deeper water. It is another favorite spot. Matagorda is a fickle spot but it is definitely worthwhile to catch it when it is on...

On the upper Texas coast lies Galveston and Surfside... The coast here is very shallow and the waves don't break hard. The long jetties in Surfside are similar to those in South Padre Island, however the waves here are rather slow and mushy...

Penguin, I will make it happen and let you know when the recon is done since you're obviously concerned. :phone: :01: I don't think your party is in jeopardy. Perhaps I'm just calling out to those who what to drive for the surf jumping more than the Saturday meal and accompanying drinking. Perhaps this will wind up being a ride at some completely other time than the "traditional" Crystal ride.

Neil, I'm not arguing with anybody. My keyboard may not sound polite, but I'm honestly not trying to start anything. I'm just looking to get my point across and if lose out, which I am obviously in the minority, then I am fine with that.:sadwavey: See you in Cali :brap:

I don't think anything needs to move, Crystal Beach is a blast, Sean puts together a great event and I am happy we could contribute this year. 2 or 3 of these a year isn't enough. I will join the Recon to establish an additional destination, I know there is a Cen-Tex group that is behind the idea and getting together more often should be the goal.

moving the ride (and it's not "my party" as you are making it out to be) to someplace else is fine with me.

the problem is someone says "let's move it" - but then nobody actually does the work to find a place to move it to.

so, if you want to take the lead on having a ride in Port A or somewhere else - go for it.

but don't expect to piss on what we have without offering a solution.

You're right. Not enough personal effort is put behind these rides (except for your cooking at every event) and its easy to fall back on what we know works best.

Jeff, looks like we need to figure out when's a good time for a roadtrip.
