We'll have to wear our glow necklaces:tongue2:Very True, I didn't think of that point :friday: We'd probably get lost in unfamiliar territory.
Shawn, thanks for chiming in. I think we'll just have to organize a "Far South Texas" ride at some point next year. I know a lot of Austinites would be down with Port Aransas or even futher south.I vote Port A,few reasons. 1. I can make Port A easier as I have more excuses to go there then just to ride skis. HAHA.. but seriously,I havent been to CB but from the pics Ive seen it always looks flater then Lake Austin. Ive ridden Port A 3 times and have always had surf, and the flat days where bigger then what Ive seen in pics.
Now it is cool having some who lives at the spot to be kinda the center of the madness. So CB is good for this.
Even if its super flat at Port A you can go closer to the channel where it bunches up and makes some swells. Beach camping is just like at CB where you need a pass in some areas. Port A has a few bars that are kinda cool to go unwind or windup(your choice).
The good news, our black out dates at work have been lifted so I can most likely make this next one and actually be there for a saturday! So where ever it is,,,Ill be there
edit....
just saw the actual riding pics and the waves looked decent, plus that rig in the background would make for some nice racing!
SO,what ever,when ever

I see there's an overwhelming majority for Crystal Beach. I'm sure every local voted for it to stay. Honestly, I don't know how you others who drive so far don't want to visit other spots on the coast that might be more aesthetically pleasing and have just as much stuff to do and be easier to get to. I'm sure there are lots of spots where pit bikes can be ridden at night in the sand. But if its all about the drinking for most of you, being able to stumble somewhere familiar, and a free place to stay at Penguin's or the "Loaner" across the street, then I guess that makes sense to me.
Neil, on Yahoo Maps, its 1117 miles from Denver to CB (going around ferry) and 1133 miles to Port A. Surfside is closer than both. SPI is 1245 and Pismo 1209. 1100 miles and 1200 miles seems all the same to me, so I don't know why you bring that up.
The Port Isabel/South Padre Island area is without a doubt the most powerful and consistent place for surf on the Texas gulf coast. The reason is simply that the continental shelf is closest to land at this point, plus it is located where it catches North, East, and South swells..
The Port Aransas/Corpus Christi area has numerous good breaks with many various quality waves.
At the north end is San Jose Island. You need to catch the ferry or have a boat to get there. This is one of the finest shaped waves on the coast on a good day. Takes a really large a powerful east to south swell to work. Then an offshore wind really cleans it up. This was Nat Youngs' favorite break on this coast. Kind of finicky and tricky to catch with power.
Surfside Beach Produces some of the better, more consistant surf on the upper Texas coast. It works on small swells and hold double overhead and better. Two factors are responsible for this fact: deep water and long jetties.

Don't get your panties in a bunch. CB is obviously winning, so I'm sure when you have your party next year, people will come.![]()
great - move it to Port A
which one of ya'll is going to do all the recon?
don't forget, Port A has a ferry to deal with also...and from what I understand, there is no way to drive around it.
still waiting for an answer to that.great - move it to Port A

The best waves in Texas are at South Padre Island, near Port Isabel . It is simply the most consistent spot. If you want to be serious about surfing in Texas this is going to have to be one of your stops...
Matagorda is another good surf spot near the river mouth of the Colorado river. Here the beach is steeper and the sandbars more defined. The waves here are generally more hollow and break with more power coming out of deeper water. It is another favorite spot. Matagorda is a fickle spot but it is definitely worthwhile to catch it when it is on...
On the upper Texas coast lies Galveston and Surfside... The coast here is very shallow and the waves don't break hard. The long jetties in Surfside are similar to those in South Padre Island, however the waves here are rather slow and mushy...
I think I'll start another poll for that...![]()
