Ever want to ride super long open shouldered waves like Malibu on your ski? Well the recent storms here in California have dumped so much rain that the Santa Margarita river (the small estuary that empties in the ocean on Camp Pendleton here in Oceanside) looks like the Colorado river. The estuary, which is normally a trickle, is currently about 300’ wide and the resulting water flow has left a sand bar that stretches about 200 yards out into the ocean. Yes the water is dirty but for the next few months were going to have one of the most kick ass sandbars ever, with waves that will break like a point break such as Trestles or Malibu. The reason I’m telling you all about this is that the paddle and tow surfers know about this too. Word travels fast in the surf world and it doesn’t take long for them to invade and even take over our normal riding spot. Even though surfers have the entire CA coast to surf, they still want our spot when it gets good, leaving us nothing. Our best defense is to show up in discouraging numbers. This sandbar will only last a few months and it only happens every 5 years or so, so any one within driving distance from Oceanside is welcome to come down and share the wealth for the next few months while its still on.

im forshur riding up the river and finding some rapids.

Matt Smith and I rode up the river Wednesday afternoon just as the rains stopped. The current was unbelievable with tons of sticks in the water. There were sections with rapids and large ripples that were big enough to B roll off. We rode North past the bridge at the 5 Fwy problably another 3-4 miles before some Military guys on base chased us out. I'm not exaggerating, if we hadn't been chased out I'll bet we could have rode all the way to Temecula, The river had that much water flowing through it. The water flow has decreased considerably but we still have the Kick ass sand bar that it created. The sand bars only going to get better as the next few swells shape it up. Its still brand new but the rides were pretty long yesterday.

you should show to the surf rider , this spot is yours , if not, its too late, they are like croakroach , they are overthere .... In Tahiti , we have same problem, they have all good spots and sometime they want to take some ours spot (usualy too dangerous and not enough good for us) when theirs spots are dirty .
I am with you but so far

vote yes on no and discourage the s.u.p. that will be digging in and boogie board tow in goons at the river mouth. The north side of the river mouth will be magic with a little swell from the right direction. The possibility of a great wave can be seen from the 5 fwy north bound in the fast lane just past river on the elevated curve. It's no secret.Rode yesterday and this will be fun to ride while it lasts.
