ever since I bought my 93 650 sj sometimes when im riding it will just shut off and I can start it before I even slow down much, ive only been on it 4 times and then I got injured and havent rode it for 3 weeks. Everything is stock except a k&n filter, I also just put an ocean pro head on so I dought that will change the problem i'll run into when im back on the water. The ski sometimes doesnt like to have throttle from 0-wherever but it also will shut off just randomly and throw me into the handlepole. I realize it could be a number of things, but what do I look for first. Is there anyway I can start the carb setting to stock incase they got changed, what is the 650 carb settings. Thats really the only thing I dont know about skis is the carb. Any ideas.

sounds like a fuel problem to me.

to make sure the pump is pumping fuel, remove the return line (top line) from the carb and crank and start the ski. fuel should pump out of the return nipple on the carb.

if it doesnt, it could be a clogged internal carb filter or a clogged something else;

take the feed line off the carb and blow into the checkvalve and see if gas squirts out of the hose. have your thumb over the hose because there should be a fair amount of fuel squirting from the hose.

if theres not;

you could have a blockage anywhere between your fuel pickups and on/res switch to your filter.

sometimes a carb rebuild is in order. your k and n filter can require a lower popoff.

could you explain what the lines are on the carb and where they go, I always thought the return was on the bottom so im confused now. I think its times to start learning about carbs.

aside from the arrows on the carb that tell which is which, an easy thing to remember is that the carb would never be able to completely purge the air from itself if the return were on the bottom.

it feeds from the bottom so air bubbles can travel up and out through the return and back to the tank.

well today I got new plugs, boots, and cut my wires back just a bit incase they were cut at all. I also got some tubing to go onto my stock hood vents so the water drains toward the bottom of the engine and not on top of the carb. I may also try and make a tupperware f/a cover or just seal off some of my huge k&n filter. Im gonna fill up with a fresh tank of gas and try err on saturday. Wont be riding hard cuz of my shoulder but i'll let my buddy do some subs and see how it works out. Anything else I should try that may be an easy fix or maintance to rule out some possible problems?

Cheap lanyards and loose grounds will cause this too.

also check for an exhaust leak.....that will all the sudden choke it down and allow it to restart.

alright, I just put on this ocean pro head and on my stock pipe there was a very small line going from the head to the pipe and the OP head doesnt have a fitting for it, what is this small line and can I just leave the line on on the pipe or should I plug the hole. its not cooling btw for those that dont know

thats your best bet....

switch your fuel lines and cehck that screen (sounds hard, but its not).....

the a/m arrestor will lower pop off....but ive never had to mess with jetting becuase of one......I have a 650 setup the same as yours with a KN and I just had to richen the high screw about 1/8th turn....
