SJ Will Not Start

There are 12 volts between the red wire and ground.

Open up the ebox.
There are two small terminals and two big terminals on the relay.
One of the small terminals is connected to the brown wire of the start switch. Measure the resistance from the other terminal to ground (black) - should be zero.

Next, measure the voltage between the two small terminals as you push the start button. Should be zero.

0? Should there not be 12 volts on the relay when you are trying to start the ski?

I think the relay is died. The ground is fine and there are 12 volts on the brown wire when the start button is pressed. The relay does not make any noise and there is no voltage between the two large terminals.

Anyone know where I can buy one online and cheap. The Yamaha dealer does not have them and they want $52 to order one.

There should be 12V between the two large terminals.

There should be zero between the two small terminals as you try to start, because closing the start switch will close the relay switch, so you have zero voltage DROP across it.
Don't blame the relay yet - figure out why you have zero volts between the two big terminals.

OK I see your point on the 0 volts. I don't think that is happening. I will go hook it up again and check it out.

To summarize.....without start button, 12V between the big terminals and the small terminals.
With start pressed, zero between them.

O volts between the two small leads when the start button is pushed.

12 volts between the black lead and ground when the start button is pushed.

Starts on the first spark and runs like a charm.

Thanks for the help Matt and everyone else.

Anyone have a good used relay for cheap?

I found a new one on eBay for cheap enough. Is this a common problem on the SJs? I am going to get more screws and seal up the box. I hope it stay dry from now on.

VERY common.

DGY Motorsports has them fairly cheap as well. Easy swap.

Sorry about the barrel rolls. It did them just fine when I had it but it tended to overrotate into a 1 1/2 to 1 3/4 barrel roll so I had to sell it.

So I got the new relay on the ski today, and it still does not start. I check to see that there is 12 volts on the brown wire when the start button is pushed. There are no volts on the brown wire. The car has set in my garage all week with the e-box open. What would have changed? I checked and cleaned all 3 switches and nothing has changed. I jumped the ski with a screw driver and it starts and runs fine.

Any ideas?

my checklist

Fuse - GOOD
Battery - 12.8 volts
Switch connections(black and white plugs on right side of hull) - Both Clean and together
Solonoid(usually comes along with a click click int he Ebox) - New and working
Switch Itself - Cleaned and checked all 3
Starter(try jumping it straight) - Starts and runs
Negitive or Positive wires have worn out and broken(never thought it but happen to me and others) - Both wires are fine

The problem is there is no voltage on the brown wire when the start button is pushed. Last week there was, now after setting for a week there is none. What all would cause this? Just a bad start switch?

On the switch itself I've always checked by used a ohm meter with the complete circuit feature with the beep. Put a prong on both end of the plug(switch side) and pressed the button to see if it was even making a loop.

I see youve tried jumping on the E-Box side and did nothing. Did you make sure to jump the white plug(start) and not he balck one(stop)

Solonoids. You should have 12v constant on the battery side(post thats getting direct battery feed). When you press the start button, you should have 12v on BOTH poles. So measure the "exit" Post and see if it has 12v when start button is pressed. If you dont, relay is dead.

I see you have jumped it witha srewdriver and it fired up. So we know the rest of your conenctions AFTER the relay are good and we a pretty confident everything BEFORE the relay are good. .......I'm saying relay.

Buying used relays is crappy dude. I've been throw 5 used when i finally just bought one new one for like $30. Used relays are no more reliable then your own. Dont skip on a part that controls the starting of your ski. It's not worth saving the $10.

I got mine from Paul at LPW, I think I paid like $25 or $35 dollars or something last year in Daytona.

I found the problem. The same guy that put the e-box back together missing 4 screws must have pinched the fused wire as well. While I was pulling everything apart it must have finished breaking. This is why I hate buying modified vehicles, you never know what bone head worked on it before you.

Shonuff,
I am guessing this is not your handy work. What kind of a messed up ski have you sold me? j/k

You see, I knew that fuse wire was a time bomb so I had to unload it as fast as possible.

I, of course, knew it all along but refused to tell you out of spite.

Kiss your girlfriend for me.
