There is no aftermarket that even comes close to OEM - not in quality, and certainly not in price.

We've used a strip of turf on 2 ski's now. It holds the hood REALLY well, makes your latch nice and tight, and keeps water out. The good thing is, you can do it with one cut in the strip, and also have it so the hood sits a bit higher, and pulls down tighter, or sitting in the ridge on the grip, so it stays put. Use a heat gun to mould it into shape, and you're set.

Your best bet with this method would be to use an aftermarket hood latch, but the two stocko's we're using are just fine.

it seems like the hydroturf undermat would work nicely if you could get it the correct shape. It doesnt hold water, nor does it retain a shape.

I was thinking the same thing..................... but in the end, It may be just be like the JSS.............. Going back to stock after 3 seasons.

Oh, if you have some striped turf (rather than the diamond cut stuff) cut a nice long strip, keeping the groove in the middle for the hood lip to sit in. If you want it pulled down tighter than that, cut the strip so the hood is sitting perpendicular to the ridge in the turf.

Then, just lay down your contact adhesive/glue of choice and stick down your first edge where you want the join to be. Have a friend hold the other side up while you lay the strip down and when you get to the edges, apply some heat with a heat gun and mould it around. Continue this until you meet back up with your join.

You could always use 4 seperate strips, but this way is a bit neater.

It may not be the ideal solution for all people, but it certainly holds down the hood tighter than the stock seal, and really, who doesn't have some old turf laying around? It's not going to cost you anything, and I bet you'll be happy with the results!

I dont mind the actual Hydro turf hood seal kit. It doesnt last as long as oem as it kind of dries out after a few years but at the price vs. new OEM you could buy 6 of them.
Nothing is better than OEM in my opinion though.
I have been buying and stocking up on those HTurf hood seal kits off ebay($13)for cheap and just replacing yearly.

has anyone used the jss since he upgraded the material used in the seal?

I am and its working great. Opinions vary on which is the best, so go with what you feel like is the best one! I myself couldn't see shelling out a $100 bucks for a piece of rubber, so for a third of the price, my stock sj hood fits on nicely and seals great compared to the stocker that was on there!!!!

Anyone ever tried the Hydro-turf hood seal kit? If so what are your opinions?

If you have a fresh one on, it keeps its memory well and crushes down great. No way the hood will shift crushed down in that firm goo rubber.

On my squarenose the newer JSS seal worked well, so did the Hydroturf one before it. I the squarenose hoods don't shift as much as the roundnose ones do. The roundnose needs the OEM seal.
I'd like to see a pic of the seal made from H.Turf though. not a bad idea.

I have not really heard that before about the round hood moving/shifting more than the square, but I'm just building my first round now.
Maybe it's because the square hood seal is, well square:biggrin:, and the round has more rounded corners so it doenst stick as well.
I've always had hood straps also:wink: . Thats cheap insurance too.

if you land your hull on its side and you don't have an oem seal it will leak water in. The hood lifts off the seal enough to let quite a bit of water in. The oem gasket has a lip to help prevent water from going straight in.
