I have been contemplating selling my 96 complete and then buying just the parts and pieces needed for my new build but when i run the numbers it's cheaper to strip a running ski and then just sell what's left over. I don't know if that would hold true on a brand new ski unless I was getting it for near dealer cost or less and it would also depend on what was doing for an engine. It would be perfect if I was looking to run a nice limited 701.

FWIW, the donor ski I am using is worth well over the cost of a brand new ski if you add RRP Pole, B-pipe, RAD flywheel, ported 760, JSS'd Electrics...etc.

its cheaper to use a donor, otherwise skis wouldnt sell for more parted out. You can buy a mint, low low hour sj ski for $4500-5500, and still get at least 2-2.5k out of what you dont use. You piece together used stuff and u might have a stator, crank, start stop switch etc, etc. that last for 1 day.

I'm not buying an entire new boat, as I am not build an AM hull. But I agree with the OP about starting new OEM everything. Thats the route I am going for my SJ for the 2010 season.....new motor using new OEM crank, cases, stator, every oem electric wire, start/stop switch, midshaft, starter w/all new heavy gauge wires, relay, msd, carbs. Everything brand new from bottom up. I have built so mant boats pieced together off used stuff, and sat wrenching way too many times. Used electrical is the worst. Just my opinion...but this upcoming year I just want to ride. Doing it right the first time.

I couldn't agree more. I built my last ski from a bare 07 hull that was used for that purpose. I had to buy every little part and it took many sources to do so. It wasn't that difficult but it was much more pricey than I originally thought and I ended up with a new ski full of old used parts. My next build I will be using my 96 as a donor ski for all the parts. It's in pristine condition and loaded with all the goodies already so it's an ideal donor.

Do you still swim in that pool?
