Sit Down to Stand Up Convertible Bunks

Just when I finally downsized to one stand up and a couch I picked up another stand up and another couch. In between I sold my two place stand up trailer.

I currently have a double trailer that is set up to carry two stand ups on one side nose to nose and a sit down on the other side. See below:

What i would like to do it make a set up that I can convert to carry either two stand ups and a sit down or two sit downs and a stand up. The second sit down is a GP760 so about 1 foot shorter than the XL in the photo.

So that begs the question has anyone made a set up that easily converts bunks from a stand up to a sit down? I am looking for something more than just sliding the bunks over (which I understand is most likely the simplest solution). Even if anyone has done this on a single trailer. Just looking at how you convert between the two.

Thanks in advance!

Nice setups, anyone else got 3 place skis one a double trailer setup? Have one couch and two SJs.

That is a sweet set up. The 3 seater I have is big.

I have been working on it. I swapped over one side to work with the GP and the bunks are close enough to also work with an sj. Then I am putting a set of bunks in front horizontally. Kind of like everyone else does. Just still trying to figure out positioning to keep the fuel holder and storage bin.

I can post pics later.

There is a style of bunk bracket sort of like a 'T'. Imagine the top of the T is the bunk and there is a mounting bolt hole at the bottom. If you put a locking nut on the bolt you could leave it slightly loose. Flop the bunks outward for a sit down, and flop IN for the stand up. The skis would sit on the edge of the bunk instead of the face but some trailers come like that anyway. Shouldn't be an issue.

He is talking about these I believe :

If you go that route you may want to make the bunks wider so you can offset the brackets or it may not get close enough apart when flipped for a standup, it all depends on how far apart they need to be for the sit down to fit properly I suppose.

In other words 2 x6 bunks , which would give you 4 extra inches when flipped with the brackets offset if you follow me here.

Yes I have those brackets now. I did try that and it kind of works but the riser bracket that bolts to the trailer wouldnt let it flop back and forth enough. I Bascially made a V with the bunks (and did use 2x6) so it supports the hull of the couch and then the SJ fits on the point of the bunk at that 12" sweet spot. It looks really narrow but actually works well to support the GP760. Not sure how well it would work with a bigger couch though. I am going to work more on it today so I will snap a photo.

Recently converted a single sit down into a multi-use trailer with a 3 fuel jug rack I made as well. It's originally a shoreland'r PWC1000 - similar to the modern PWC12/14L from shoreland'r. I added a longer and heavier wall tongue (Shorelandr uses .083" in their 3x3 tongues, I bumped it up to 0.120") and an extra crossmember with the intent of adding the extra sideways standup.
  • 3 standups (2 length wise over the axle, 1 sideways)
  • 2 dirt bikes
  • 2 dirt bikes + 1 standup
  • 1 dirt bike + 2 standups
  • 1 sit down (in the center of the rear bunks) + 1 standup (sideways)
Rear bunks are 2" angle as a "Vee" saddling 3" PVC. These suckers allow easy loading/unloading and seem to handle the weight of most 500lb or less whips no problem.

Front sideways bunks are unistrut, supported at least 3 places front and rear with cross member for extra tie down points saddling 2" PVC. This (minus the unistrut) is basically how I've made a bunch of hitch haulers - 40" bunks.

Gonna test it out from Denver to LHC in about a week with 3 standups.
I've loaded it up so far but no long trips. Rebuilt the hubs with new timkens and bearing buddies for good measure. Made some semi-permanent mounted tie-down straps to make loading/unloading quick on the rear bunks. the sideways bunk will essentially use the same tie-down method for hitch haulers.

It may seem silly - but I live in a development with an already illegal fence door (HOA...) and my access width to my backyard is only 68" - so single wide trailers are all I can handle right now unless I want to take up VALUABLE garage space - aka fabrication shop space. I'm technically not even supposed to have a boat trailer back there but what they can't see won't hurt them...

Yea here you go. It's a quick install/remove design I came up with because - being a multi-use trailer - I wanted the dirt bike front tire chocks to be unhindered if needed. It just so happens that the stand ups use the same general spot for the bow eye (to keep the tongue weight light). The little rubber wheels are for when you throttle the ski up onto the trailer - so the hull doesn't get damaged by the wheel chock - they would hit the bow otherwise so I just wanted a little safeguarding - mainly for other people that care about what their ski looks like.

I used some scrap 3/8" stainless rod and made some big "L" pins with pin holes. The cinch strap with clip is from an old dirt bike tie down strap.

By itself - it's designed to hold the ski on as you pull it outta the launch. Combined with the over-the-bunk strap, and putting some forward tension on the bow tie down - the ski is pretty well locked in place during trailer carb tuning tests and emergency braking scenarios. My trucks not fast enough off the line to need it tied down the other way and it could only slide about 5-6" back at most based on testing.

Finally finished the bunks. Sideways in front to put a stand up but also have room for storage box and fuel rack. The bunks under the smaller sit down are 14” at the top point so they work with the sit down and a stand up. Happy with the result as I really don’t have to swap anything around when I swap skis around.

Those are more like sedan bunks , personally I wouldn't have drilled through the trailer frame like that but that's done now so.............
