should i just build one?

ive been looking for a decent deal on a 701 sn or rn sj. i found one that was perfect ,but my dumb ass was to indecicive and someone else grabbed it. i was thinking that maybe ill just build one. there are alot more motors, hulls, and miscelaneous parts than complete skis. i have not built a ski before but i can turn a wrench and pretty sure i can do it. i have about $2500. do you think i should just keep looking for a deal to come along or can i put together a nice ski with that amount of money?

you will be suprised how much it costs to build a complete ski from parts, each time you order it there are shipping costs

so i have a hull with pole bracket and a short block.. i needed everything else

once you start listing it down its huge

building from scratch is not the cheapest way to build a ski, if i were you id look for a deal

heres some rough figures for building from scratch i dont think any prices are too out to lunch and some may even be low, this doesnt take into account all the little stuff like bolts etc (which add up that you need) also assumes you can get a decent hull for $500 and decent short block for $500 (tough call) using a protec or similar pipe

hull/hood 500
lowered pole braket 150
pole 150
pole bolt 40
hood seal 100
motor mounts 130
short block 500
bedplates 35
fly wheel cover 35
battery tray 15
water box 100
straps 50
strap brackets 50
steering plate etc 100
throttle 40
start/stop 50
midshaft 125
couplers 75
pump 225
ride plate 100
grate 100
impeller 150
gas tank 75
exhaust tube 50
exhaust 350
ebox/cables/cdi 200
stator100
flywheel 100

Total so far 3695

that dont include any control cables either

Steve's dead on. It adds up, and fast! Lots of little individual nut and bolt part you need to buy. It's alot easier to start with a compete ski and and build it from there.

For 2500 you should be able to find a nice 701 square and still have some coin left over for a couple mods.

ok thanx guys. thats what i figured. its not just buying a hull and motor and gettin on the water. there are quite a bit of sn 650 for sale for decent prices. if i were to pick one of those up and a 701 motor, how much would i have to change and would this be worth it?i think im just gettin antsy cause i thought i had one lined up. i was all exiceted for a new ski, but ill just keep my eyes open. thanx again

Definitely just keep your eyes open.

The deals to come about. I have had a project RN that I have buying up parts on for a year now..just finally getting ready to put it together. Whats sad, is that I just went and purchased a RN last night for less than what I have in the project one...and this one is much nicer.

you'll find a million answers to your questions, but after having owned both SN and RN and modded them both. I would go back to a SN without any reservation. Alot of peeps will bang on the SN's, but you can get a ton of ski in a SN setup for you money. There are no real advantages to having the RN except aesthetics and if you'll search you can find the thread where we listed "sweet squares." There were some well built machines. That being said, I had RN envy when I ran my squares and then bought one. Now having been on both sides I'd go back and not miss my RN. I picked up a SN in real good condition for 1500 and it had some mods (pipe, prop, footholds, intake) whereas I bought a RN that was bone stock and still payed 2k for it. As long as the engine's a 701 and in decent shape the sky is the limit for your mods and being on a budget you def. can get plenty of good mods for your ski with the remaining 1000+ dollars you'll have if you bought a SN. Some basic mods...

Foot Holds - $75
Turf/padding - $100
High Compression/girdled head - $250
Bpipe - $300-500
Swirl prop - $100-200
MSD enhancer or total loss ign - $150-400

$925 - 1525...depending on how picky you are as a shopper.

I've been able to find plenty of good deals from members on here and pwc today. I learned a ton by doing those builds and asking questions on here, but every minute you spend wrenching is a minute you could be riding. For your $2500 budget I think if you'll be patient you'll be able to find a nice ski with some mods already done for you.
Don't be afraid to hunt CL (via Search Tempest). Most of the guys on here will post good deals from CL throughout the country.
