on the computer hooked to the scale at the autopaint store or bodyshop; you click on fleet then yamaha then waverunner (or maybe just yamaha waverunner) then there are MANY colors. Hopefull they also have a chip location (never checked that). there are chip books (samples) and there is a place to click for the location for each formula (like what book and what page

Ah that makes sense. I know nothing about paint. Do most Body shops have computer color matching for cars/boats similar to Home Depots house paints? If so I could just bring my ski down and have them match the paint.

They have all years of 'yamaha blue' from when it was actualy blu to todays more of a purple. Most all bodyshops have the computer mixing system but I have never worked at one that had their oun scanner like home depot. If scanning it is what you want to do then goe directly to the autopaint store and have then scan it with their color eye.

The scan eye as they call it is not an exact match because it works off of the database of colors and tones and tint the closest match to the paint that you have,Grezzmky for sure will argue with me but personally I wouldn,t waste my time with SW auto paint. When I first got in the painting biz they were using SW auto pain, you have to apply it in almost transparant layers with a lot of flash time between coats,if you happen to run it it fizzles up where the run is at so it can't be sanded out ,you have to start over.I talked them into switching to PPG and not only were the results much more impressive ,the PPG was much easier to shoot ,it was also cheaper. It was a no brainer.

I use SW only because the last two shops I was at used it. I am not a production painter so no paint have I used on a daily basis. I have never had those problems with the SW paint though. The short period that I had my own shop I used PPG and when I worked at the custom shop we used Dupont and House of color. Sherwin has a discount line which was called Western but now I think is ACME and they have a nice primer and a GOOD clear that is dust free in 15 min, I love that stuff for painting stuff in a pinch where you dont have the best conditions and it is cheap like 30 bux a sprayable quart. Extreme speed stuff like that is usualy very unstable and EXSPENSIVE. also the run thing IF i were to run clear I would not waist my time trying to sand and buff it, just 800 DA it and reclear it. also SW is nice because they have a Planet Color line that has a lot of custom stuff like House of Color and they dont tell you but they use the same reducers and stuff as the reg paint just in diff packages

The paint I was shooting was SW single stage as most all of the older factory Yamaha paint is single stage and SW did have the paint codes, the newer stuff such as the VX models are basecoat -clearcoat, but generally what I did was spot repair, lots of paint blending, repairing noses knocked off skis etc, rarely did I paint an entire ski.

Ive almost never repaired anything using single stage. Ive deff never (ok onced, in school) burned a blend with SS.

Its a lot different than doing base -clear,base clear is easy to hide repairs with ,the single stage takes a bit of finesse,I got quite good at blending the repairs to the point that I would ask the customers to find the repaired area , they couldn't.

No there not, they are single stage.
Why would Yamaha use Base/clear? Thats just ridiculous.

I maintain the hulls on a rental fleet of 30 VX110's/ FX140's ranging through all the years. No base/clear on white.

BTW - The "scan eye" as you call it is called a photo spectrometer. PPG calls theirs "The Prophet".

and you are right, PPG is way better than SW.

The blueish purple color is the last one I repaired, it was base -clear,I have repaired many of the white skis they are single stage.Tryin to spray white SW single stage is like trying to spray water.

Ok.. i wondered if you were talking about the steering pod/hood, sorry Terry. I guess i love you again..hehe

Yes, they are colored plastic with a metallic base/clear. I just repaired a couple blue ones last week. They get broken on the pointy tip area all the time.

I would still do the repair right and use base clear. I have never been in a situation where blending SS was a good choice... but i could see something like a rental fleet would make since

How is using base -clear the right way to do a repair over single stage? If it has base -clear on it I repair it with base-clear ,if it has single stage on it I burn in the single stage with blender. Its kind like doing a paint repair over gelcoat,it will never match perfectly regardless of what you do unless you color coat the whole bottom, totp, side bottom etc.
