Shattered Piston, Cases, Rod

After a good solid 2 tanks of waist to chest waves at Ponce yesterday my ski suddenly died when landing from a medium wave. I'm thinking the battery cable or something as it would click but not turn over.

Here's what I found.:aargh4::aargh4::aargh4::aargh4::aargh4::aargh4::17::17::17: Looks like jetting & lubrication was nominal, ski was running great all day, hitting hard. Looks like the wimpy cast piston just shattered. All bearings look fine, no evidence of water ingestion.

I think with resleeving the excellent porting can be saved. Anybody know if the slight bulging can be addressed?

odd,
how long have you been running that cylinder/piston combo?
maby the tolerances were to tight, or compression to high, or bad luck and a defected crank

but look on the good side, the other end of teh rod dident go smashing through your case and through your hull o_0

Ouch... it looks like you're getting pretty bad a blowing stuff up too.

My guess would be that the rod broke first and toke out the piston skirt.

Who rebuilt that crank? :scratchchin:

Are you sure that a Hot Rods crank because the lower rod journal looks to be trimmed down?

Maybe it's just from hitting debris inside the case.

It was purchased brand new & came in a Hot Rods box...

Are you talking about the same end machining visible on the "good" cylinder?

I just went to check my own hot rods crank and I guess it's normal for them to turn the end of the rods down.

For some reason I always thought that the hot rods were more rounded on the bottom journal.

If you look at the busted rod you can see it snapped clean in tension; looks like the piston shattered, jamming in the cylinder & the crank kept spinning, pulling the rod in half. So I wouldn't think it was a crank failure.

Damage amounts to new cases, crank, pistons, cylinders, and domes. Resleeving the damaged cylinder would take prolly 6 weeks? & cost $$$$$$$$

Anybody have a stock, low hour short block FS?
