SBT break-in oil

I just tried SBT's Break-in oil.

It smells exactly like Kawasaki's petroleum-based premix from the early 1990s.

I had planned to break my new motor in on dinosaur oil (for ring seating) but Tom21 and #.0 both recommended SBT so I gave it a try.

Just wondering if anyone knows whats in the SBT oil & what so special about it . . . ?

It's good stuff and it works well, just be sure to mix it with your premix and follow the instructions on the back.

It has increased detergent additives with decreased synthetic oil content to aid ring-seating and it carries away the particles faster.

WOW.... I'm glad I asked.

So you mix in sbt oil AND your regular premix? SBT's table works out to a 30:1 mixture. My normal premix is 40:1. So put them both in and its about 17:1. That sounds a tad thick.

I don't think they make that point very clear in the instructions... about adding both oils.

In fact, they say that if you have already mixed in your own premix, empty your tank, put new gas in and add the sbt oil. I don't see anything about adding both. Maybe it is assumed that the "fresh gas" you put in already has premix...??

"If the gasoline in your tank already has oil in it, drain it and fill your gas tank with fresh gasoline. Mix in SBT's Break-in Oil as specified in the table below directly into the new gasoline in your watercraft."

Edit: I had simply mixed up a batch of sbt at 30:1 and was about to take my first ride that way. I think I'll leave it parked for another day until I find out for sure. >:- )

And I would just run whatever oil your going to run at about 40:1. I've broke in engines in about every concievable way, and have yet to see/feel any difference. Upon asking the now defunct team Kawaski's main engine porter, he said the same thing..ride it. If it's going to mess up, it's going to do it no matter what. He also mentioned type of oil didn't make any difference on break-in. I always use synthetic nowadays, never an issue. SBT's instructions are a grin, I even tried them once. Each to his own..have fun.

The instructions (for Premix motors) say that if the gas in your tank already has your own premix in it, DRAIN IT. To me, this implies that they do not want both your own premix and their break-in oil mixed in the gas together.

They then say to put fresh gas in the tank and add the SBT oil. No mention of your own premix.

I've heard that motors don't break in well on synthetic because they're so slippery that the coating on the rings never "wear off".

My builder specifically told me not to break in with synthetic.
His recommendation for break in oil was the SeaDoo Mineral Oil. I bought a gallon for under $30, used it, and moved on to his next recommendation of Castor 927.

yep, that's why I mentioned each to his own..thinking I would trust Team Kawis old engine builder more than most..just me. I personally use the amsoil dominator oil in all my skis, last year we raced(2006) my riders brought home four national titles, skis all run great....just saying
