Rustoleom Appliance Paint Job

Well after spending a few weekends here and there since November, I think I am finally going to paint my ski, I was going to spend about 200 in paint and spray it with Polyurethane, but decided to just spray bomb it after testing out some Rustoleum Appliance paint on just the nose piece, it turned out pretty nice and glossy. It could have been better but I just wanted to spray it quick and get a worse case scenario, but it still looked nice. So screw spending hundreds on paint, Im going to do the black, maybe white, still debating.

I bought the ski this way, and just was not a fan of the flat black, and wanted a little shine,

Sanding!

And the nose piece I tested it out on Picture does not do justice, even for the crappy job I did to get a good Idea of the paint.

Im going to sit and think between white or black for a few more minutes and go pick up some paint.

i dig the flat black!! no need to paint

I started sanding a few months ago little late :)

Just got back from Home depot, Decided to go with the black again,(Glossy this time) I was going to go white, but My Tow Vehicle is a blacked out Jeep Liberty, so I figured they would match at least, I used some rubbing compound on the piece I tested it on and it really smoothed out the paint.

hhh
hit it with 1800 wet sand when your done and be sure to give the paint a few days to cure before hand and dont push on the sand paper and it will come out looking like glass!! just take it slow youll get the hang of the fine wetsand after a bit. i go more by feel then anything cause its hard to see the little stuff so it just takes a little practice to get the feel for it.

the gloss black will look killer im just a sucker for the flat brappen boats

You ruined it :(

What paint was on it before?

Im not sure what the paint was before thats one of the pics the guy sent me before I bought it; right after It was painted I imagine, It looked decent when I got it, but it didnt hold up that well, I dont know if it was the sun or the water It was durbale but faded quick. Besides I want my ski to be shiny

I debating on sticking with the white turf, or doing a different color, any suggestions?

Off topic, but hey kennay Im new to the area, when does it start getting warm out around here??

Yesterday I painted the hood, turned out well, and then I had a spray can cap full of mineral spirits I was using to soak the spray nozzle in between coats and spilt mineral spirits on the front left corner and ruined a spot the size of a baseball, today I sanded down the corner smooth and resprayed, it looked good but it turned crappy as it dried.... so I will re be sanding that side back down in the morning,

Otherwise this morning I started on the ski itself with great results, I sprayed down light coat after coat until it was all covered, it dried a little ruff, but earlier tonight I hit it with some 500 grit lightly to smooth it out and then sprayed it with a thicker coat to get it nice and shiny, and it dried and still looks wet with a nice shine to it. If I can give one good tip with this stuff is dont do light coats, Not thick of course but spray it so it shines and it will stay that way. Ill post up some pics once I get the hood looking as good as the rest,

That appliance paint works great and last long. I found an epoxy clear coat in a spray can from PJ1 and sprayed over the paint it has held up real well to fuel spills and sand.
The first pic is from two years ago, the second and thrid are from a year ago when I got my new hood.

Did you wetsand yours after you painted??? Or did you just go straight for the clear coat? Im debating weather I should or just use rubbing compound, its pretty smooth and has a nice shine as is.....
Your ski looks good, I saw it in another post that helped me decided to go with that paint.

The first time I wet sanded before I used the clear coat. The second time I was in a hurry and just sprayed over with out wet sanding and it is hard to tell the difference. Here is a pic on the stock noose peace and hood with clear coat.

I am currently playing with a red PJ1 epoxy in an aerosol to see how it turns out. I will post pics Sunday.

Here is the link to the PJ1 web site. You can find the clear coat at most motorcycle shops.

The topdeck and hull are gelcoat.

The hood is painted.

Gelcoat holds up great and I'd leave factory gel if in good shape. The hood paint sucks and repaint it with whatever you want.

In the pic you have the pole masked off but not the motor? Put the poly over the engine bay if anything. F the pole.

I did mask off the motor before I painted of course,
And for my pole being so well protected....

Was'nt going to mess that up :)

Its a stock pole wrapped in Carbon fiber, the previous owner did it, He mixed some of the resin/wax they use on surfboards and clear coated it. My favorite part of the ski.

Today I wetsanded the topdeck with some 1500 and then 2000 Grit and then buffed it back out with some rubbing compound, It turned out pretty glossy for no clear coat, and its smooth as a babies butt. I got the hood fixed up after spilling Mineral Spirits on it, and gave up on the nose piece, after sanding the paint off I put down to test the stuff out, I painted it and for some reason the paint bubbled up, so I sanded again re-painted, and now it just looks like crap, Sanded one more time :smashfreakB: and tried again it, turned out worse. Im going to grab a used one off ebay and start over fresh, other than that I need some decals, turf and I will be done, I will put up picks when I get it finished.
This stuff worked great, doesnt look like a 40 dollar paint job at all.

Nosepiece is plastic, chances are your epoxy appliance paint will not adhere properly.

Use a flexible plastic type paint like a Krylon. I Kryloned a ski and it held up great. They offer a clear coat too. Krylon dries stupid fast. Great for light layers, you can paint a ski in a night with it if you had to.

After wetsanding rubbing compound and a little turtle wax.

Unfortunely I cant focus my camera because the focus knob broke, so you cant tell much of a difference, in the shine, but the stuff worked out well

I didnt touch the hull since painting, Im going to leave it so its easy to fix up every once in a while as the paint wears off beaching and what not.
