Super Jet RN Complete Rebuild on LI

Yeah its a big pill to swallow haha but I think it will be well worth it. The fit and finish on my hood was great. Only issue I had was the hardware they gave me for the bracket was JUNK so I went to the local hardware store and got all new studs and lock nuts.....

Well took the SJ out with my friend and my cousin on my GPR. Had a sick day on the water and the ski ran great. I think I got the tuning pretty good because there is no bog or hesitation but I am going to spend a day fine tuning and checking plugs once I run another tank of 25 to 1 and break it in. I can say this ski hits soooooo much harder than my friends stock RN and is a blast to ride, tons of low to mid power. I rode it for a good 1.5 to 2 hours and it was so much better than any of my older skis. I can honestly say now I know why guys say just buy and SJ when people throw money into older kawis. Coming from a 650, an x2, 2 550s (one with a 650) and ridden a ton of 750s I can say the SJ is way more fun than all of them IMO. When I was dumping money into this thing it sucked not getting to ride it but today made it worth while. I still have to install my nose piece, returf my chin pad, install a bump stop for my pole on the hood, and put some graphics on it and it will be done.

Here are a few pics from today........

About to leave my garage for the first time

All cleaned up, just a few loose ends to finish and I think I will have a pretty nice SJ to ride....

Ocean temp is 44. IDK about the bay though. Probably colder

I would suggest getting rid of that stock water separator going to your tank vent and cut the hose a couple inches above the tank vent. You'll be happy when you don't have water in your gas down the road.

Also the T to your flow control valve is reversed. the T side should go to the pisser and the straight should go to the flow control. Makes it easier to adjust the flow control valve IMO. It doesn't respond well to adjustment unless it has some pressure/volume going to it. Then it fine tunes much better.

Do you have dual cooling?

The bay was actually pretty nice. Last week I went on my GPR and it was COLD, (low 40s prob). Yesterday it felt like high 40s maybe even 50, not to bad. All I had on was my wetsuit and I was subing my ski and swimming around without being cold at all......

Yeah I think I am going to change the T, because in factory pipes instructions they said to do it this way, but I guess they don't assume you are using a FCV. It was a little annoying to adjust and had to be open pretty far to be where I wanted. Good idea I never thought that swapping the position might be better, lol I was just so happy to actually ride it. And yes I am running dual cooling, I though you needed it for a head and a pipe?

You don't need dual cooling but it is better for july/august.

Is it ran both lines to the manifold or one to the manifold and one to the pipe?

I run mine like that because it makes it easier to fine tune the headpipe screws and the flow control with more pressure in the cooling line. That's if you have one dedicated to the headpipe. Yes the pipe runs cooler, but you can tune the screws easier and I feel that has more of an advantage.

One line to the mani one to the head pipe. The pipe was too cold for sure, but like I said I did not go crazy fine tuning it, just wanted to make sure it all worked and was going to be reliable lol. I checked it every 20-30 mins and it was warm but not hot, you could touch it. The water is still really cold too, so I am sure I am going to have to adjust it more when it gets warmer. I have the top screw open 3/4 of a turn and the other 2 closed as per factory pipe specs.....

with a dedicated line you can close in on that top screw to about 1/8 or 1/4 and it will really come alive. Just make sure your carb tuning is spot on. Don't go right to WOT all day when testing that obviously.

Cold is no big deal when you can get the tuning dialed in that close is the point I am trying to make. You can close way in on that flow control valve too I bet. Do it with the ski up against the dock and the hood off to test what RPM it opens at.

Oh and BTW factory pipe specs are bottom screw open 3/4 of a turn.....
The top screw only will give you more pop off idle.

Yeah your right I opened the bottom, I did it exactly how they said. I have not really tuned much yet just was going for a baseline run. Getting the carbs set up was a pain the motor kept wanting to go lean and run away when it was on land, I spoke to Ryan and he told me to put 2.0 needle and seats in along with my 115g springs since I have aftermarket FAs on it. Tested popoff and I am right at 32psi. It doesn't run away or bog or hesitate at all now so I guess it's a good baseline. I still have to check plugs and stuff once the motor is broken in.

Thanks for the advice I can't wait to get it all finished and setup so I can just toss it in and ride with no worries, how do you think I should run the screws on the pipe? I am not so concerned with top end as much as mid to bottom. It hits pretty hard down low as is but really comes alive in the mid range, I didn't WOT at all so I cant really speak as to how it is yet.

I run with only the top open and don't have any issues running WOT across the inlet for 4 miles straight. Its all about dialing it in. if you are going faster at 3/4 throttle than full throttle its too lean.

Little update, besides a few small BS things I had to get fixed up (intake grate, and small gasket leak on the flywheel cover) I finally got my graphics kit and started putting it on. Did one side so far and it looks great IMO. Take a look now it matches my GPR.....

Added a few more BS things, got a Jet Dynamics Intake grate, ride plate, and pump shoe on order. Also another couple rides in, maybe about 4 tanks through it and the motor seems to be running well. I have to fine tune the carbs but it is almost done. Also just finished setting up one of my trailers to carry two skis to the surf. Finally starting to get warmer out here :)

Finally got the last few things done and it is now all finished. Just need to get the NYS numbers put on. I think it has really come a long way since I got it, now I have a fun all around SJ.......

Looks nice, I have two 96/97 RN's that have stock graphics..... this makes me want to pull them off....

You should lighten the flywheel, or did you do that already?

It's come a long way from "How you doin". Really nice job Kyle.

Thanks Glen, yeah it was a TON of work but well worth it. You should come ride with us soon, I have been in the bay with it like 7 times this season only made it to the surf once so far and it was a :):):):) day. Once I get my regi all taken care of I will be out in the surf more. You ready to ride?

Thanks, yeah I am very happy with the graphics on this ski.
Stock flywheel, next year I will prob do that with and MSD and a mag pump, for now I am going to ride and get used to this ski.

Well haven't really updated the tread to much. I put about 20-30 hours on the ski since being assembled and it has ran great.

I saw some stress cracks in the poll from a few hard landing so I went ahead and reinforced it, also kept breaking chin pads off from hard subs so I made a few modifications to it.

Then last week the ski decided to suck in a reed. It still had compression and I managed to ride it for another 30 mins to get home but when I got to the dock I knew I was going to have to tear it down. So back to the machine shop the motor went and I had Jetmaniac send me a 735 top end with the blue porting and modified sleeves. Now the motor is back together and I will be riding it again before the weekend. Also I went ahead and added a new intake grate, ride plate, and aluminum pump shoe. So now it should be all ready to ride lol, seems like one thing after another but as long as I fix it and ride I am happy.
