Riva Red thread stripped

I have a Riva Red pipe with stripped threads. Tried to tap new threads but tap bottoms out where small hole is in pic. Can I drill the metal out where the small hole is so that I can get more length for the tap to go further in ?
I think that the P/O just cross threaded then JB welded the fitting on. Lasted 12 years since I have owned.
Any other suggestions ?

You can grind the tap and remove most of the tapered lead. We had to do it lots in the machine shop, some taps had no lead to get a full flat bottoming tap.

Yeah, you need a bottom tap. Like Pro-Pulsion said, you can grind a regular tap or go purchase the bottom tap. This lets you fully thread the entire depth.

1/8" npt weld on bung is cheap if you have or know a welder.

Never heard of a bottom tap before. Googled it. Looks promising. If not, will do the 1/8" npt weld. THANX !!
