I've been reading this post for a few weeks now, and after 11 pages of posts, I'm still not seeing a valid way for "Joe Schmoe" to compete with a WF or a Jr. Magoos?? I saw Paul's suggestion about having a people's choice award, but I still feel as though there needs to be at least a few categories for contestants. I understand we don't want to create boundaries in this competition because everyone in it is there to have fun, but I honestly don't see how a $200 ski is going to compete with a $2000 ski is going to compete with a $20,000 ski. Do you guys see my point??

At any sort of auto show, there are multiple categories....

1. Show and Shine
2. People's Choice Award
3. Best Stock
4. Best Modified
5. Etc

I really think for a competition like this that a few categories would be the best route to go. I also believe we would have more entries if we made awards more attainable.

Just my two cents.

Any thoughts on that?

I don't think it's needed yet this year... It's still small and just for fun.

I am sure the event will probably grow due to all the interest, but I still feel we should keep it as simple as possible still. Remember, this is a 'freeride'.

Great ideas, for an organized competition, but you have to realize this is not a truly "organized" event, it's just a bunch of friends getting together to ride when you get down to it, there is no insurance, etc etc. Keep it simple. Besides, it's just for bragging rights, and to show what you can do.

Thats just too much stuff. People are trying to make the event better but only confusing it. The point of the build off is to see who makes the best boat. It's not meant for everyone and their brother to join up. It's a "**** or get off the pot" situation as Slut says

Keep the events simple....more is not always better

The sport will grow, if there is an avenue for people to compete and show their skillz at all levels. I would think this would include the boats that they are riding, and a little slap on the back for all the time and $$$$ put into them.

It's probably too late for this year, but I do bleleive there should be an Amateur buildoff in the future. Let the big dawgs hammer it out for bragging rights, and let the little dogs have a bone for their effort...

That is basically what I'm getting at. I understand the sport or event in this case is small, but I can't see there just being one class. How many entries are we having at this point? If it's anything in the 10 ski realm, two classes may not be a bad idea.

Taking this from another angle....

A contestant contemplates entering but believes they don't have a decent ski because they are going up against a Jr. Magoos or a WF. In effect, you've limited the entries. So in theory, but not creating more than one class, you've done just the opposite of what was proposed. Do you see my point? Now if there was an amateur buildoff in addition to the "Big Dogs", I bet the entry list would go up.

One class is good if everyone has the same talent, same resouces, same pocket book, etc. In this case, that isn't true.

Just something to think about.:Banane01:

I think you're missing the point. The Riot Ride is not just the buildoff, it's a fun ride, with no real rules other than being safe/respectful.

It is about fun, Period!!!

Look at pwc racing. In the begining, everyone thought more classes were the way to go. in hindsight, it was the begining of the end. one of the big reasons racing lost it's clout was because it is boreing.... no spectators, just racers & family.......................Too many of the same thing!

The biker boys do their build as an invitation only build. Just two guys. maybe that is where this should go to in the future. The idea of these builds is to go as far as nessary to win. The idea as I see it is to push the evlolope of the builders. To get the best from them as possible. everyone in this has a budget in mind. I know I do, but the trick is to let your talents get the most for the dollars invested. This year, I see quite a few of the guys with solid chances. I wouldn't expect this to be a Steve or Paul show. anyone entered has a chance to win.

Maybe if there were differant builds at differant events thru out the season. Do those build as an invitation only, two or three guys going at it,
maybee differant levels of builders, I don't know. but one big build with differant classes, isn't what I feel this is about.

Like Jett said, these are fun, non-sanctioned events. It's where we get togeather for good times. These builds are for nothing more than bragging rights. Lets keep the fun in it :Banane01:

i agree paul
a true free ride guy is there about fun not competition
keep it that way
the prize should be bragging rights around the fire or at the bar the night after

Lets not take the fun factor out

I am part of this buildoff and allthough I might not win, I just want some people to say, "that ski has some cool ideas that Pauls or WF doesn't". I would be happy just to have the Kawi guys be stoked to see a bad-ass Kawi Freeride ski.

I will not be disappointed or bummed out at all if my ski is blown out of the water by somebody elses. If it is I will just be stoked to see a ski THAT badass:headbang:.

I say one class for all the marbles. Even if I don't win, my ski will be posted all over X-h2o and the riotradio site and maybe even in a magazine. That is enough of a reward to bust my ass to make it the best ski I can.

I am sure when we get there, all the participants can get together and decide the judges with no probs at all.

It seems to me that the point of the build off has changed since last year. Last year it was balls to the wall amongst the big dogs. My suggestion was based on last year's turn out. If the event has changed then it hasn't been communicated well enough.

Highroller was in it last year, and he's far from a 'big dog' IMO. Last year there was very short notice also, so most didn't have the time/resources to do a ski.
