rev limiter on 61x

Could a bad stator create a rev limiter issue? My ski has a misfire or something at around 3000 rpm. You can here it when its on the trailer but it will rev past it. In the water it is alot worse you have to jump the ski out of the water to get it past the 3000 rpm deal. I have already changed the cdi, and the coil. I am thinking the stator might be bad. The problem only happens sometimes but it has gotten worse over the last few months. Thanks for any help --Jason--

Pull your flywheel cover and take a peek just to see if its nasty.....

What about your plug wires?

I replaced a stator and MSD together and solved a similar issue.

My bet's on your plug wires.
Remove the spark plug boots, then the terminals. Have a good laugh at how Yamaha attaches those terminals, then take a breath and inspect the wire core.
If it is corroded, start cutting back until you hit fresh, uncorroded wire core. Reattach the terminals and boots, and try again.

I did the wire ends and all looks good. I also tried a second coil just incase a wire was broken in the middle. Still no good. I picked up an in line spark tester I might try that and see. It is the kind that goes between the wire and the plug and has a light that flickers when it sparks. It is a joke how they attach the ends with that little wire that is pressed in wire to keep it from pulling off. Thanks --Jason--

I'd try a different CDI before a stator - it's easier to do.
Do you have your stock overheat sensor connected?

Could you elaborate some???

This summer I had issues that ended up being a combination of fuel restriction and bad start/stop switch.....

So you haven't pulled the flywheel yet to check the stator? It could of loosened up and gone retarded. "Never go full retard" -- Robert Downey Jr., Tropic Thunder.

The ski runs great when you jump it up and get it going. I thought it was in the carbs I adjusted the low speed jets and the ski came to life. But after one trip around the lake the limiter was back. I have changed the cdi, cut the plug wires back, installed new spark plug boots, replaced the coil. Could the start stop be doing this. I had a similar problem with a bad start stop on my 550/750 conversion ski but it wouldnt take any throttle without shutting off. Thanks for any help--Jason--

Unplug the black connector going to the start/stop switch (right outside the ebox) and see if that improves things.
Be aware that neither your stop button nor lanyard kill switch will work.

So you adjusted the carb's and the ski came to life but after one trip around the lake it started running like crap again! I would look into the carb's a little deeper how long has it been since they were rebuilt? You might have a needle seat issue going on. Go ahead and try what Matt said unplug the kill wire so you can rule that out if it is not the problem. Also like already asked do you have the heat sensor unplugged.
