I don't S turn. On the blaster or the SJ. It's all about the straight on rolls baby. :cheer: :cheer:

Come to think of it.....I don't think any of us so-cal dudes S turn.

All prefrence, all fun.... You guys are spoiled with good surf too !

When its real big like last years rager, I know what you mean if you s turn
you will over rotate. bigger the surf less setup needed... again all preference and style. I think the easest way to teach someone is to show them how to get ski to do some of the work so they dont "pancake" anything and get discouraged. Its all good !

For sure....just different styles. I'm not calling the S turn right or wrong.

Word up.. I know how you guys "Roll". I look at everyones style and I love the west side flare... Its killer. I even try and tackle all the different ways to roll or flip too. I anaylize alot of vid and get diffrent ways to do things... My homework.. might help someone learn and be happy with the sport.

to s turn or not to s turn.... that is the question...

I would say when learning off waves in the ocean, forget the turn till ya get the first few things figured out... that's the problem w/ rolls, lots of things to think about before ya leave the water... one less thing may actually help for the first few months of doing them... I do think the S is the proper way of doing rolls

just a thought....

and jerry, Ross does the s turn, or use to.... I know that

I am just getting back up to speed from last year's first barrel roll attempts and can do whatever I was doing last fall for a roll. It is really just an inverted 360 stab but I am working on getting it less corked out and more rolled. However this technique or lack of technique results in a VERY flat landing from 15+ feet up. It is the same on the superjet or X2. It feels cool and looks neat but the people on the beach can hear my hull pounding when I land which is putting some sweet cracks in my X2. I need to thicken things up in the middle under the seat befroe I break the poor thing in half. I really just need to get to Jersey and get another lesson from Pete or Paul to get past this stage in my learning curve so I don't completley destroy this X2 hull before it even warms up. Jet skiing is so fun I hope I can power my way through this stage of my learning curve so I don't have to get two new hulls after this.

i have a few of these under my belt as well.i call it the "heliflopter"for what its worth my best attemts have been without the s turn.but take that with a grain of salt as i have yet to roll

pete, i used to have the same problem you are having now.

it's been mentioned a few times already in this thread, but i'll pipe in my .02 as well here.. basically, you just have to start your movements a little sooner..then exaggerate them a little tiny bit more.

example1: a big aerial nosestab : you basically just cruise up the face of the wave, then as your about to take off you do a little body english to get your ski turning in the air (no need for details, i'm sure you know what im sayin)

example2: a barrel roll : you want to throw your weight / lean forward almost before you leave the wave. by the time you leave the face of the wave, you should already have alot of motion /body english going on. like jetskier79 said, bars cranked to the point of destruction, full on throttle, chest/torso leaning forward and to the side you're rolling.. and dont forget the S dance.. that is the KEY.

once you get the hang of just doing rolls by basically falling off the back of the wave (no big air required), then you can focus on the AMCF style of BR's.. big launch, then BR.

when i was learning to BR, i'd watch Malone on Freeloaders over and over. There is a slo-mo clip/close-up of him doing a BR that still freaks me out. he basically launches off the wave, waits a second or two, then initiates his BR while in mid-air. how he does that , i have no idea!!! but it helps you see the form and body english.

basically, when done 100% right, you're just hanging on for the ride in a BR. every wave is different though, so, you have to adapt for each one. you're almost there. i remember how mad i used to get when i was in that spot. keep pushing pete!!!

Thanks Saki, your info helps a lot. I use to have a video from that day we rode at Shark Shallows and you were rolling off everything. It is one of the best videos I have seen for me. You were using a little of the style I have to much of but it looked killer. You were slinging the tail out a lot on the face of the wave with the nose really low when you were inverted but your landings were butter. I think if I keep trying it will look like that in a month or so.

Pete, me and Hangtime are trying to get down thre for Mother's Day weekend but I need to sweet talk my Mum. I can't wait!

Here is what the start of my jump looks like:

And this is the finish just before the tail comes around to flat land.

I know Paul told me I had to start the roll earlier but I can't talk my brain into doing it that easy.

I think I need to do what Saki and Jetskier said and not go so high until I get the proper form. I should just take the chest high waves and go low and tuck it like Jetskier does in his Blaster video.

Thanks guys:biggthumpup:

that is exactly what my blaster rolls look like. I end going over the bars while inverted (but kinda vertical) as the ski hits the water.

that is EXACTLY how my first few roll attempts were too. Thankfully I've got coach Champion out here to help me out.

I'll just reiterate....start the rotation before you leave the face of the wave.

And seriously.....on the x2, stop leaning forward. Use all that forward momentum and turn it into sideways momentum. I know everyone says, lean over the hood, but that makes more sense on a ski that doesn't have fixed steering. With a standup, leaning forward, keeps you from "opening up" too soon, which slows your rotation and throws it all off axis. With the fixed bars, you can't open up, and all of your forward motion is translated directly into pushing the nose of the ski over too far. In your case, you are expending all your lateral energy on pushing the nose down.

You can kind of see that in my blaster roll clip. And you can really see it in this picture. 4th and 5th pic in the series you can see how straight up I am standing.(click the picture for a slightly bigger version)

Just my input...

Tons of good info here.

Pete, from the looks of those pics and what I remember about riding your ski...I would have to agree with Jerry on how to roll the X2. Just start that rotation earlier on the face of the wave, and keep your weight farther back. When I roll a standup I always put pressure on the bars and lean forward and how much depends on how steep the wave is and how fast I am going and the angle at which I hit it. One thing that struck me about your ski (and the blaster), is that because of where the bars are (I guess) you don't need to push on the front because there is already pleanty of weight there. So as opposed to tucking the shoulder over the bars like on a standup...I lean almost inline or behind the bars. I just looked at the sequence shot ronny did, and you can see that my weight is way farther behind the bars. I'll post that and try and find a good standup roll pic to post also. Just to compare.
The last roll pic is surf stance which also puts more weight forward.

Hope this helps ya Pete!

man, i'm not the only one with this problem after all.

last summer i started trying to roll at a really relaxed pace. problem is, i've been doing nose stabs so long that i can't break the stand up and back posture.

i've made maybe 3/4 around, but i'm spinning about this goofy point near the nose of my ski instead of concentric with the axis of the ski, and hanging myself off the back of the ski. i get about half way, then the back end of the ski and myself fall like a rock... just collapse from gravity with no spin.

those i've talked to say i need to crouch and bear hug the handle pole and hood... man its hard to get in a new routine when you've done stabs sooo long....

grr i gotta get back at it...

man this thread is cool , so much info on how to do a roll :hail: :hail: :hail: :hail: :woot:
it would be cool to have a section on a how to do free style ticks like some one mentiond how would we go about starting something like that
