replace wear ring???

A buddy of mine let me try out a skat superslim in my sj and after putting the prop in and starting the boat out of water I hear a rubbing sound coming from the pump area. That obviously means that the prop is rubbing on the wear ring. It doesn't do this with the stock prop, but I'm guessing thats because the stock prop is worn down to the size of the wear ring.

I've got a brand new skat swirl on the way and I'm trying to decide whether or not I should replace the wear ring or not.

It's an 03 sj and it was a saltwater boat, but the ski is mint and has hardly been ridden in the salt. There is absolutely no corrosion anywhere else in the pump area and everything looks great.

Would it hurt the new prop to put it in the existing wear ring and see if it rubs?

If I do need to replace the wear ring it seems like I have 3 options:

1. I can replace it with an new/used OEM wear ring. ($129 new)

2. I can replace it with an interchangeable plastic wear ring. (About the same price)

3. I can replace it with an expensive stainless steel wear ring. (Who makes these? I heard Riva does, but they only sell a 155mm wear ring)

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks:biggthumpup:

you are probably fine, remember, the stock prop is aluminum, it is going to wear out faster.......

I have ridden in salt water every summer for the past 7 years, stock wear ring.

you can safely put a new impeller in there just to see if it rubs or not.

if it doesnt go on smoothly, dont force it (obviously).

personally, i like the oem route better than the WSM plastic route.

i do like the fact that once you go the WSM route, you can change JUST the plastic liner. i dont like that the plastic liners are quicker to get damaged, thus leading to buying more wear rings.

oem, baby!

My wife's square has it bad. The prop rubs so bad that I can see sparks in the pump when it's running.

Do it right! Get a NEW oem pump liner housing! And yes for an '03 your due for a new liner... Call Barney's Yamaha (st.pete) ask for Radney in Parts and he'll get you a great price, as they're not cheap (retail about $170)

To be honest I'm not huge fan of Barney's for reasons I can say and can't say. I've called Radney before and their prices are even higher than Riva's it seems.

They certainly can't touch Parker Yamaha's OEM prices.

Just my opinion though.

Thanks for the advice Chucky:biggthumpup: . Im going to give the old one a try and if it still makes that sound then I'll pick up a new used one or a new one from Parker.
