FX-1 Removeing The Pump Shoe

Flash-FX

No Square..No Round..FX-1
If you don't want to save it, heat on the aluminum and some persuasion with a large beating device (hammer). It can get ugly...:eek:uch:...nothing that can't be fixed during a pump conversion though.

Well I got the shoe out. Thanks for the tips Flash, Special! I started with the heat gun but wound up using a torch. The hotter the easier! I cut a notch in the shoe so it would give me some room to pry from the bottom side. Heat it up to the point its starts to smoke and pop it out. Pretty easy.

could you show more pics of the shoe? I'm going to grind mine out to ~144mm and I'm curious which sections will break through to air pockets

if you are going to go that route take the shoe out and fill it with epoxy and then glue it back in the hull. Then grind it away. It will be paper thin. Picture below is the pump seal from a 144 pump against a fx1 pump shoe.

I just smacked it with a rubber mallet then started to pry a little with a prybar.

In all honesty the best way is the 650 pump or to make a sj shoe fit. If you break yours you can have mine for shipping if you want, i have no need for it.

after all you are doing all this work might as well do it right in the first place.

When you say modify a new grate, what do you mean? The SJ intake grate has 4 mount holes correct? And the SJ pump shoe has two mounting holes but the FX1 grate uses one on the shoe. What about the SJ pump shoe, will it fit in there without hacking up my ski? My hull is immaculent and dont wanna screw with it.

Well I still have a fx1 shoe so I can't tell you for certain. I know the Sj grate is too long, and the fx1 grate has one mounting hole vs the two in the Sj pump shoe -however I don't think it's as easy as drilling two new holes in the fx1 grate

Ben, have you tried opening up the FX1 shoe yet?
I don't see why with a little grinder work and a drill/tap you couldn't get the FX1 grate to fit in the SJ pump shoe.

not yet - I think I'm going to first tackle my X2 project this winter

What motor is going in the X2?
What about having somebody cast a new, solid, FX1 shoe out of aluminum and opening that up to fit the pump? If you found somebody with the equipment I would think you could pretty easily make a sandcast of it.
