Registration question

Want to make sure I won't get screwed on registration. I'm planning to put together an aftermarket hull before Daytona and I'm not sure I'll be able to get the full registration before hand.

First, will a temporary registration be sufficient? Second, if the ski is fully registered, do the registration numbers have to be on it? I don't really want to put basic square letters on my new hull and if it came down to the wire, I would rather run without.

Well it's not like I plan on showing up with a blank ski with no papers. I'm just asking since the legal way is to register it as a homemade and that isn't as simple or as quick as filling out an online form and paying your money. So basically if everything isn't done in time but I have proof that the ski is registered but no official registration # has been assigned yet, would I be able to ride?

Take your new bare hull to the parks and wildlife office (or whatever its called in Ga) and apply for your homebuilt title. I did it with a new bare hull so it was obvious it wasnt any kind of production craft.

It took about 40 mins for me and I left with a registration and vin numbers

Cool, I'll check into that. That would make life easy. I know here they require receipts for materials. Did you have to provide anything like that? Imagine someone saying, "I paid a friend to make this for me and here is a print out of money paid via paypal". Just sounds really shady is all.

I showed an invoice for the hull, so make sure you get something from highroller. A Parks officer inspected it, they took my money and gave me a registration and told me what vin numbers to put on it. I'd been out of there in 10 mins but the officer was at lunch when I showed up. The bare highroller will look the part of homebuilt, they wont doubt you at all. You might have to pay sales tax of your invoice, i don't know ga's laws. In Kansas theres only sales tax if its purchased from a dealer.

I have registration / license numbers on my hull and registration to match, along with my Michigan registration tag but no VIN plates...

Will I have a problem? I could even bring my title if I had to...

They didn't assign u vin numbers?, there's no vin on the registration?

My registration slip has a vin on it, yes...

Not the most legal thing, but I had a title left over from a scrapped hull. The FS-1 is a 94' Kawi 750 :shhh: That's why I am wondering if I will have an issue down there...

You might want to get some VIN on it. A few minutes to get a VIN plate on it isn't worth a few hours (or a few days) of not riding in Daytona.

They checked my lightweight hull very closely.... which is legally registered as a homemade boat, with a state issued HIN plate. He spent a good 3mins checking the #'s over against the paperwork.

Make sure your completely legit. There was another AM hull there early last year, that was not allowed in the water last year because it didnt have HIN#'s. Most states if you are cought operating a vehicle without #'s it get impounded till you can prove ownership. Def not worth the risk.

do what superramjet said while the hull is bare take it down there. sounds like the easiest and most believable way. since its obvious you are building the ski.

go to a trophy shop once you get your vin #'s and have them make you a vin plate and just rivet it on the ski somewhere.

as for numbers on your ski... have a guy that does vinyl on this site make you up a set of numbers. that can't cost more than a couple bucks.

i know georgia is close than NY but i still wouldn't want to drive all the way to daytona and not be able to ride my chit.

Here is the deal. I have an aftermarket hull (Rickter FS-1). I had a title left from a scrap hull.

-Title is for a 1994 Kawasaki 750 (titled in my name, VIN # on title)
-Registration is current, have registration slips I carry with boaters safety (with VIN # on the registration slip)
-Registration Sticker is current (issued by Michigan), sticker is on Hull
-License/MC #'s are on the hull (vinyl), next to the MC #'s (see pic below)

Only thing I DO NOT have are the VIN plates. Will I be OK if I go get some made or better yet, try to salvage them off the scrap hull?

I haven't had an issue here on my lake yet, but do not want to drive all the way and get floored.

Call me a cheap ass, I don't want to pay all the taxes I will get dinged with nor do I have time to sit during the work day at the Secretary of State.

The guys at Daytona last year were making fun of my 750 because it looked like someone hand etched the HIN and then rivetted it where the HIN is supposed to go. I never thought anything of it and had the registration in clear tape to help keep water out as well. Basically everything was a little ghetto but they were pretty cool. Seems like if everything matches, they don't care. Just keep in mind that they aren't stupid.
