RAD flywheel installation

First off hello everyone, new over here from that other place

I've got a charging flywheel to put in my SXR today, any hints?? I've got my M18x1.5 to get the old one off, valve grinding paste the lap the new one.

A few old posts I've read have mentioned timing issues, how important is it to check after installation? I've heard RADs aren't neutrally timed.

How do I adjust if it needs it???

Thanks for the help :hail:

talking to the guys that make the flywheel they don't rec. lapping etc it will void your warranty i think

i just cleaned the taper and torqued it one
never had any trouble

every time you lap it the flywheel moves a tiny bit closer to the crankcases. the fact that the rad wheel is aluminium would intensify this.i think laping is better suited to wheels with steel hubs

Lapping is using an abrasive paste between the taper on the crankshaft and the taper on the flywheel and spining them against eachother back and forth.

The abrasive paste cuts a tiny amount of material from both surfaces so that they seat perfectly to eachother, as machining cannot gaurantee perfect alignment of the tapers.

So that tiny amount of material removed naturally moves the flywheel back a few thou.

i dont think lapping would move the flywheel back far enough to harm anything.

what about heating up the hub to expand it before installing? ive heard mixed feelings on doing this. its probably the same as installing it, running it, then retorqueing.

the timing change is only on an superjet
if you are talking about the timing chage as you rev it up
as long as they have not moved the pickup point on the flywheel it will be the same all the way though for a kawasaki

Thanks wax, thats was one of my main worries, not keen on a rebuild just yet :fingersx:

I'd read an old thread about rads having some amount of advance built into them from the factory, so I had to ask.

yeah its because of the stronger magnets on the yamaha flywheels
and the fact they work on a rising voltage

the sxr runs an inductive pickup
so that doesnt change because its not effected by the magnets
just a ferious metal passing throught it proxmity

tell me what year sxr do you have

I've got an 05, pretty stock ATM, but I have already jumped the temp sensor for the 7deg advance, thats why I was worried about inadvertantly adding any more advance.

ah see you need an inferno ignition and then its not a problem you can set your advance of your laptop
Stock class legal as well

if you look at the stock sxr advance surve you will that advancing the timing 7 degrees in not a good thing it holds heaps of advance up high then
